…not dangerous. It has been, it is the standard of care across the country and approved by every major medical association in the country.
We heard comments about people growing up to regret this. That is false. The data that gets thrown around is something along an 80% desistance rate. That came from people using old data where they determined if someone was likely to be trans basically by guessing and saying, oh, that person has more friends of the opposite sex. Let's assume they're trans. Oh, they didn't turn out to be trans and said that's a desistance rate.
More accurate polling shows that regret rates or deep detransition rates are 2%. And of that 2%, the vast majority say that they detransitioned due to bills like this and attacks in our community and feeling unsafe being out in the world.
We heard comments about an explosion of people being trans. I myself am trans. There's another thing about me. I'm left-handed. In the 20s, the rate of left-handedness was 3% and it exploded to just over 10%. The reason? We stopped beating children. There is not an explosion because of pressure. There are people who are able to be out and to be themselves. And that is why we are seeing trans people in the world.
There's a lot of things this bill does, denying care to communities and my people who need it. But there is an important thing that this bill does not and cannot do. It cannot stop us from existing.
It will not get rid of trans people and long after this body has reached sine die and legislation like this has stopped coming forward, trans people will exist.
We have existed since the priestesses of Inanna. We existed in World War II and we will exist far beyond this body.
To my friends who are going to vote no, thank you so much. Thank you to my dear friends. I appreciate it. And to those of you who vote yes, shame on you. Shame on this body.
