It annoys me when people talk about women not being able to feel safe at night when it is men who are many more times likely to beaten or killed. Women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault but rape (actual rape, not regret sex) is far less common than your standard instance of thugs smashing a man's head in for know reason. Rape is also easier to avoid with a little vigilance, since it happens almost exclusively in unpopulated areas, such as parks or industrial estates.
As a man, I'm not ashamed to say I'm scared walking around my hometown at night and I'd rather spend 20 pounds on a taxi than have to risk the subway. In fact, and this isn't a joke or an exaggeration, there have been times on the subway where I've wished I were a woman. Picture the scene, just you and a group of thugs on the carriage. What would you pefer to be asked, "How big are your tits?" or "Do you like hospital food?"
