It was called the Battle of Khasham supposedly. I heard about it like 6 months ago or so. I watched this video about it.In Syria, wagner had Syrian troops and militia to serve the role of the prison brigades: locate the enemy so they can move in and hit them.
I remember seeing some of the volunteers complaining about it. especially the Reddit Rambo types. One guy who I think was an American and ex US military running away from a Russian missile attack crying. Killing dune coons isn't like fighting people that are more capable. Even as terrible as the Russian military is they are still better off than the dune coons were. I mean the dune coons didn't have Su-25's doing ground support or missiles and artillery support. Wagner performance in Syria made them and the Russians get cocky.Yeah. But it's not as bad for these volunteers as for Russian mobiks who thinks they're living in a dramatized WWII war movie filled with heroics, comradeship and romance.
I shit you not, that's the perspective a lot of grown Russian men have, it's all like one big LARP. I can't overstate how prevalent that is, especially among men older than 40.
Can't pretend I know shit about defense communications, but it seems pretty stupid to me. Probably because it's free and they didn't set up anything else? Still think they should have implemented a more robust and secure military VOIP system since then, even if they just use a commercial version of one. The US seems to use a version of WAVE for its military VOIP, the Finns use something from Bittium, and I'm sure there are other options. That's just what I could find in 5 minutes of googling.View attachment 4929821
This is an image inside a major battle group in Bahkmut.
It appears they're using online voicechats like Discord and Google Meets to conduct these. Does anyone know why? Are these services better encrypted, or just have servers and businesses located on their side of the conflict? This is very interesting.
"I fear they won't be spared when the multipolar world arises"
noice (cute pfps btw)
Wagner heavily uses smartphones and their accompanying apps, Prigozhin and Kadyrov threw a fit on telegram when the MoD suggested soldiers not be allowed to use smartphones (and also to shave their faces lol). For the convict strike groups in Bakhmut, they plot their route onto google maps (or an equivalent) and order them to follow the route strictly, or die trying. It appears they're using online voicechats like Discord and Google Meets to conduct these. okay tbf there is a group of milsperg lolcows known as "the reformers" who think the US shouldn't have adopted the Abrams and instead just kept upgrading M60s ad infinitum...1950s tonks are so good 70 years later it's a wonder anyone ever kept developing new ones in those 70 years is what I've learned from all this vatnigger T-55 coping

This is impressive amounts of retarded. I wonder what his username on Kiwi Farms is.
Americans these days are used to fighting under established superiority. Not sure why they'd think it would be the same when their army isn't involved.I remember seeing some of the volunteers complaining about it. especially the Reddit Rambo types. This is a Ukrainian base. the article of this photo was The New York Times.Wait, @Kept Ya Waiting Huh where is the pic from? Is this the Ukrainians or the Russians or Wagner?
A major factor in this engagement - long before the Ukraine Invasion kicked off - was the rivalry between Wagner and the Russian MoD.tl;dr: Putin wants to test Trump. Obama was a straight pussy and Trump was blustering, so Putin wanted to see if Trump would pull his forces back or engage.
in more Russian Pragmatism... the Soldiers in the Wagner Unit that was used in the attack were their 2nd-stringers, mostly used for support and security till then. They were also slated to finish up contracts and go home in a month, and get paid contract completion bonuses. By feeding them into a meat grinder, Wagner only had to pay out death benefits to the families which were less than the contract completion bonus.
Supposedly the Wagner forces & Russian officers were told to expect contact to try to flank the military base and basically chase off the defenders but not to attempt to kill them all. The best case scenario was that they would take the base and when the counter attack came, get on the phone to the Americans and say our troops are there, the Americans then being rational wouldn't want to provoke an incident and after a PR op Wagner would withdraw. The expected outcome was a few hours of gun battles with the SDF/Americans and a withdraw and "Oops fog of war".
What instead happened was a complete lack of understanding of how the US responds when the enemy lacks civilians to hide behind, and the the full wrath of god was rained down on them.

Compromise the corporate infra/servers, or get some ukrainian with access to install some Minecraft mods. How would you go about hacking Discord?
I infer that they probably don't use mobile, or at least a few key ranking members do. If they caught any Ukrainian soldier with the app and forced him to open his phone and log into Discord, that would be wraps for comms. However, in the hands of bases and devotees, such a thing might not happen. As for espionage, I kinda doubt it if access is either private or stationary and under supervision.get some ukrainian with access to install some Minecraft mods
Finland is now part of NATO, I am sure Russia is pretty happy about the news.

I think its time for the US to make a few military bases near the Russian boarder.
I haven't seen or heard anyone use the term hoopty in a long time. Probably since the 90's. lol
My thoughts too about the monitors, but I think that makes @Blatant hypocrite 's point more valid about that being insecure coms. I still wouldn't have let them get a pic of the screen because of all the shit you can glean from it. Or who knows, maybe that's secret Ukraine Command comms, its really hard to tell. Slavs gonna Slav after all.The real crime with that photo is not that they are using Discord, it's that the monitors were on when the photo was taken. If you look at ANY photos of an American Army command post, either the monitors are turned off or all the pictures are taken front facing with the screens turned away from the camera.
Really bad INFOSEC. We should not even know they are using Discord in the first place. I suppose at this point it doesn't even matter. In Iraq the US Army routinely used IRC chat. The same program World of War craft nerds used to organize their guild chats were also used for various Brigade formations to talk to subordinate units command posts. I bet there even was some crossover between WoW guild members and actual soldiers dropping Heavy Ordinance on hajjis. The only difference is it was done over the SIPR network instead of open net. There is nothing wrong with using an off the shelf platform. The issue comes when the enemy knows you are using it, and how.
One more possibility: There's a lot of things they could be doing with Discord that aren't strictly classified. They could be talking with the press, or politicians, some relatively unimportant maintenance or maybe even "Please bring more beetroots to make borscht."
