I think Trump did fuck her and pay her off. And then maybe his lawyer slipped her a few dollars to keep her mouth shut during the campaign, but withdrew the money from the wrong account. So what? That's an accounting error. It can be fixed in two minutes and it would be like it never happened. How does prosecuting this serve justice better than, say, sending Trump's lawyer a letter and telling him to pay the campaign back? I already know, I just hope someone asks them so I can see them try to answer.

It's not like Trump engaged in open, widespread donation violations for years like ActBlue. And it is open, you can download their donation history from fec.gov and see all the funny transactions and the reversals when they're caught doing something a little too obvious. A widespread pattern over many years, with attempts to stay under the radar, is evidence of criminal intent. A single error may (or may not) meet the elements of a crime, but it's hardly worth pursuing when there are much bigger crimes happening.

And there was no intent to deceive or defame anyone, unlike a certain candidate who used campaign funds to commission a fake dossier to smear Trump and keep him out of the White House. Kneecapping Trump's Russian policy with the hoax, and arresting Michael Flynn for daring to talk to his counterpart in Russia, probably contributed to the bad relations between the countries and thence the war in Ukraine. For all that sabotage and the international chaos that ensued, all they had to do was pay a fine.
