I'm sorry but I fundamentally disagree with this response. You can frame them as "an almost 18 year old" all you want, but the bottom line is that they're not 18. They're a minor. They are both minors. There are certain things you do not do in cases such as this where both parties are minors. Searching for NSFW content created by and/or shared between either of them (not saying you did that) is the biggest and most obvious road you should not travel. If IRL content was ever shared, no matter which party it came from, it's CP. Doxing either of them is also something you should not get involved with. Laws vary, especially from state to state, and the last thing you want on your record is some sort of felony minor endangerment charge because their parents start receiving unhinged threats directed at their kid and decide to press charges.
That being said, it does appear that the aforementioned relationship is a fresh one, or freshly announced at the least. Although I suspect it's gone on for a while considering there was art of the two posted with the announcement, both accounts seem to be heavily averted to NSFW content of any type. That makes sense, since they're both minors, but it also means that it is very unlikely on the surface that the motive had anything to do with being exploitative. They probably just genuinely like each other. I haven't seen any evidence of anything inappropriate taking place, Romeo and Juliet laws would protect their relationship once one of them transitioned into adulthood, and as long as nothing inappropriate took place during the two years and some change that it took the other to become of age too, then no harm no foul.
We're not talking a relationship between two from the upper and lower range of adolescence here. We're talking a relationship between two who are right in the middle of it. They are both young. The fact that this relationship was announced is another factor that steers me away from suspecting any sort of foul play. Anyone who knowingly grooms a minor doesn't then take to Twitter to announce that they're grooming a minor. You can see the immaturity smeared all over the announcement. This was an innocent relationship between two minors who like each other and weren't even aware of the ramifications that could arise from revealing such a thing to the public. It was likely only announced the way it was BECAUSE of how young and inexperienced (in general) the "almost 18 year old" is.
To me this reads as if they made a hasty decision to get ahead of future accusations by announcing their relationship now, before they're an adult, because announcing it after they're an adult would be a VERY different story which also wouldn't warrant the response I'm writing here. They likely figured that explaining themselves before it became problematic to (after turning 18 ) would set the groundwork for their audience to understand the situation and not jump straight to conclusions. Unfortunately it seems as if the opposite occurred. But I can see where they were coming from. They're both kids in the eye of the law, they've both gone through puberty, the relationship doesn't seem to be sexually charged in any way, and the age gap is only three years.
It is clear as day that the 14 year old was not groomed. It is also clear as day that the 17 year old is not approaching this situation with the mindset of an adult. For fuck sake they don't even know how Twitter works and they're more concerned with throwing away a relationship and apologizing in the hopes that they'll get their deleted account back. They clearly have a lot of growing up to do, and I highly doubt that the relationship between them was anything other than genuine and innocent attraction. Could it illegally go somewhere further in a year or two when the second party is only 17 and the first is 20? Sure. But in this case I assume that it's more likely it wouldn't, especially noting the absence of any fetish content whatsoever from the accounts of either party.
Attacking either of them for something that isn't even illegal (14 x 17 and nothing more than romance), and I wouldn't even call gross, is just fucked. Neither of them deserves this. There was no malice on the part of the 17 year old, hell they didn't even understand how serious their situation could be. I bet you they don't even realize what it fully means to be doxed. There are plenty of fish in the sea of the furry fandom who actually prey on minors and seek to exploit them. Divert your energy to those figures instead of going after a kid for liking another kid. Hell, as their minds develop and mature, they might have wound up drifting away from one another anyway. It didn't have to be ended like this, making them each feel as if they've done something terribly wrong in addition to doxing them and deleting their social media accounts. I guarantee we've all been there. I've been there myself even, a 16 year old who mutually fell in love with a 14 year old. We dated for a little while and then she and I drifted. It's a normal part of growing up. Romeo and Juliette laws exist for this very reason. It's not like she was going after some prepubescent kid and blackmailing them into depending on her or something. She LIKED them and they liked her back. Nether of them deserves the hate they're receiving for this and, as I believe it is truly genuine, ripping them apart so forcefully could genuinely scar them both into being incapable of maintaining a relationship in the future.
There are people out there who deserve all the negative attention in the world. I personally do not believe that these two are among them. This is solely based on the facts that are presented at this very moment. But based on the way this played out, I don't anything damning cropping up from this whatsoever. If that somehow changes and it turns out the "almost adult" has a sinister second face that they're hiding from the public, then I'll happily eat my words. But until then I believe this was just two kids who like each other and nothing more.
