the thing is dems and rep are still beholden to voters to a certain degree, that's why all the election shenanigans are obfuscated (for now). the moment the average citizen loses trust in the election process, it doesn't really matter anymore how many "votes" anyone gets. doesn't even have to be simple apathy, there will be a lot of shit go down once it's happening.
TPTB like to constantly drop MUH DEMOCRACY, but don't understand or don't care that in the end it's a compromise - it's either that or outright warfare for power. if everybody knows it's a sham there's no point in sticking to it if no one else does. same way they don't (want) to understand it's a pressure release valve. your faction might lose but if the majority is still for something it's still the majority, and if the goal isn't met or shit gets worse that majority will switch, thus you can always excuse it with "the greater good" and under the hood it makes sure it will always stay somewhere in the moderate middle because that's where most voters are.

Exactly. At its core, voting is way to abstract and remove violence from social conflict, as in a 'we voted and there are more of us, why bother fighting with swords about it' sort of thing. The minute people start to think 'that is a fraud vote, we actually have more dudes on our side, time to settle it with swords' then everything goes to absolute shit faster than you might think.
