One of the most delusional communists I've ever seen is Solveig Inga, (@_ArtsyMarxist_ on Twitter, Nightingale Art on FB). This may not strictly belong in the art thread - it's more about the person's attitudes - but I couldn't not post it.

Her art is good - better than what I could paint. She regularly gets commissioned to do paintings in the $1,000 range. The little dragon tchochke is also by her, which isn't quite to the same standard. I don't know if it's for sale, but it looks like the kind of thing you'd buy on Etsy for $100 since it's clear the scales are just painted on.



Compare and contrast with that one renaissance statue that's been carved so finely, it looks like it isn't made of stone.



And if this seems like an uncharitable comparison, bear in mind that I am not the one making it:

Because to her mind, the only difference between a good artist and one of the greatest of all time, working in a very difficult medium is the labour and resources they have at their disposal. With enough of both, she could sculpt something as good as the Veiled Christ. As a demonstration of this, she shows two of her sculptural works:

I'll give the bust a free pass, since it doesn't look finished. The dragon is at least competently made. But they are both made of clay, an additive medium. Nigga doesn't understand that taking material away to make a stone sculpture is orders of magnitude more difficult.

And the best part? She doesn't know how to sculpt stone, but is determined to learn! After all, how difficult can it be? The so-called 'greats' only got good at it because they had churches and royalty to commission them!

Reply button is broken, but if she really wants to learn stone carving, she should start with either soapstone or wood. All the greats most likely started with wood, as wood is a lot cheaper than stone and a lot easier to carve. The dragon is painted quite well. It’s hard to paint something that small and three dimensional. I just hope she sealed the paint, else it’s just going rub off with handling.

Yeah, I feel bad critiquing it since it's better than 99% of the "art" in this thread (and moreover it's just cute). But when you view the image at full size, you notice that the shading on each scale is just a single paint splodge, which spoils the appearance a little. It's still a lovely piece of art, and you wouldn't notice this at a normal viewing distance. But comparing oneself to the very best tends to invite that kind of scrutiny.


As a side-note, it's interesting how visible brush strokes are the kind of thing you could use deliberately, for artistic effect, in a 2D painting, but not so much on a 3D sculpture. The exact reasons for this probably have a lot to do with Impressionism, which popularised the idea that a painting (even one by a respectable artist) was allowed to look like a painting - brush strokes and everything - rather than the thing that it's a painting of.

Until then, the main role of painting had been to create a likeness as realistic as possible. But that role was, at the time of the Impressionists, rapidly being replaced by photography. So paintings needed a way to distinguish themselves from photos. I suppose there wasn't really a contemporary equivalent to that in sculpture. So when a sculpture is painted, it's not expected to look too much like paint.

There is a tradition of leaving sculptures unpainted for artistic effect, but the origins of that are entirely different.

This might seem like a pedantic distinction, but she's not narcissistic. Narcissism would be if she thought she was one of the few artists in the world who could sculpt like Giuseppe Sanmartino. Communism is where she thinks anyone with a base-line level of artistic talent could sculpt like that if they owned the means of production.

From my experience, the fandom from 2014-2015 was wild but in kind of a charming way.

There were only a few games to work with that only sprinkled a teensy bit of lore for each game. so the fans had a massive field day with creating their own interpretations of certain characters that somehow caught on with the rest of the community. I'd take question mark faced Jeremy over freshly stewed SJW Jeremy any day.
