Well TIL. God that looks absolutely horrendous, I can understand why there was backlash. But sadly closing it all down seems to have been the wrong move in the long term. Maybe. Who knows.

It does make me think about why so many people dunk on Reagan for closing them down. I see a lot of people put the blame on him alone, ignoring the massive change in public opinion against Asylums in the 1970's that was pretty much a non-partisan issue with support and detractors on both sides. I wonder how many redditors who are so quick to hate on Reagan for doing so have even seen this clip?

I really think we are seeing a repeat of the 1970s in a way. Race politics and sexual liberation gone mad, inflation, political scandals, corruption, crime... Except unlike the 1970s there seems to be a lot less good faith to solve the problems and far more in trying to use them to further a agenda. Jimmy Carter was a moron but he wasn't malicious, or deliberately setting shit up to fail, or sabotaging the US on purpose and gaslighting people about it. He also didn't have dementia or was a puppet.

The problem is that nothing really changed except that there was no centralized place to see the terrible indignities they suffered anymore. They just were taken advantage of, brutalized, and murdered on the street instead.

What happened at such institutions was disgraceful, but the solution was just "if there's no institution, then we can't be blamed for the terrible quality of the institution".

They really were gorgeous- maybe I’m just partial to mammoth, 19th century brick structures. Also interesting was how they were often constructed a fair distance from cities (or on isolated plots in suburbs), thanks to Kirkbride’s theory that exposure to natural elements/fresh air/daylight was critical to healing mental illness. Alas, they became difficult to maintain economically, and the style gradually fell out of favor. Many of these old structures have since been lost due to demolition, but I have heard of portions of some being gutted and reused for apartments (ex.: AvalonBay’s repurposing of the infamous Danvers State Hospital).
