It reminds me of why the lobotomy, and asylums in general fell out of favor. There's an analogy I like to use with all of this hyper-liberal, "freedom" nonsense that has pervaded the culture these days.

Imagine a large and prosperous city, surrounded by towering, sturdy walls. The city has lived in relative peace and prosperity for generations, to the point where the newest generation has only ever known the walls. Eventually, the new generation decides the walls are impeding them. They're getting in the way. They're old and not needed anymore, and they should tear them down and expand the city. Kiwibros, that coworker I spoke about. Long story short: we were talking and he mentioned his preteen son. He's into gaming/nerd culture. I made a passing comment "Whatever you do, don't let him watch anime..." almost as a joke, but he looked at me inquisitively and asked "Why?"

That got us on a hour and a half conversation regarding Chris. You are right, you can start your own life as an adult even younger than this, but that comes from a process that started when you're younger and you climb up stages in life: finish school at 17, get a job at 18, move out at 20, get married at 22, have a child at 24, etc. Give infinite money and fame to a 22 years old and you are fucking them for life when they haven't gone through the processes to get there and don't know how to deal with it.
