First mentions of Jews and Judaism was around that time in Greece. Not saying there were a lot of them, just that that was when they first started making appearances in Europe.

People still talk about the Khazar theory, though to me that would only make sense if and only if the original Jews in the area were either gone or started travel with the Khazar merchants. Rhine is a major river so using it for transport for caravans would be a good idea to hit up places not on the Silk Road since once it got to Arabia it went to the Mediterranean sea if I recall so you're not hitting too many places on land if you're a Khazar trader if you're falling the Silk Road. Hitting up the Rhine river you'll come across any Jews in the area once you get inland and go to Switzerland.
