Gresham is a suburb 20/30 minutes away from Portland.
I looked up the diner he was referring to in that news article, “Fuller’s Coffee House” (136 NW 9th Ave, Portland, OR 97209). Sure enough, it’s in the middle of downtown.
Seems to click with the Gresham theory. He probably visits downtown occasionally. And I don’t know the rent in Portland but I’m sure it’s ludicrous. I’d imagine suburbs like Gresham might have more dirt-cheap housing.
If I recall, he lived in the Seattle area for years. So maybe he lived with family or something in La Grande as a way to transition. It also makes sense he’d live near family in Gresham if possible, since he’s an unemployed bum who probably needs handouts all the time.

I just had a thought. It is obvious that we (and the brothermen) make Shane very very mad.
