The DC sold pretty well during it's very limited lifespan when compared to something like the Gamecube and the Xbox.

I'm still combing through the video looking for goofs and lies. 3:00 minutes in James goes on to say that he played the Genesis version of EWJ as a kid even though he has said before (most notably in the Castlevania overview series and when he reviewed the Game Gear Sanic games) that he didn't have a Genesis as a child.

I think people are way overthinking the "what consoles did he own as a kid?" narrative. The way he phrased it, it could easily be a game he played at a friend's house. And in Sonic Memories he confirms that he never owned a Genesis but he had a buddy who did and that allowed him to get exposed to a bunch of Genesis exclusives.

It's kind of obvious really... one thing that sucked about the early days of AVGN was his blatant Nintendo fanboyism.

With EWJ my theory/headcanon is just that he played that version as a kid, the internet confirmed for him that it was the "better" version so he went with it for this review.... and seemingly assumed the rule held true for the sequel as well.

(What is the consensus on EWJ2? Last time I read up on it, it seemed like each version had major differences that made them all worthwhile and unique so unlike the first one, there isn't really a "definitive" release here).

Noticed a lot of folks mention the hammer to cartridge scene. It was very lazy and forced, like a cheap callback ("This is the part where I make the angry face and break shit"). But mainly because it had nothing to do with the game itself. It used to be more creative and relevant, like when he shot the Rambo NES cart with a flaming arrow. He couldve had some fun with this, have the nerd shoot it with a prop version of Jims gun, maybe one of those dog enemies from New Junk City chews it up and then have the cow fall into frame and crush the cart.

Nah, I'll just smash it with a hammer, fucking brilliant. I would expect more from a review of a fondly remembered classic platformer of the 16bit era, especially one that fits the classic nerd wheelhouse (catchphrase-spouting cartoon character and fart sounds). It's never been more obvious that Mike Matei was responsible for a lot of what made AVGN entertaining. One could blame a lot of the worst AVGN episodes on the source material not being very interesting, but Earthworm Jim should've been an easy layup of comedic content.

No. I've never heard of which version of EWJ 2 is superior or whatever. Only significant difference is that in the SNES version you can switch weapons.

I can't remember what clips I saw that brought me to the conclusion, but I think the last game James played on his own, for fun, was Ocarina of Time. So I think he did have an N64, though he didn't branch out much with it. I know he had never played Banjo-Kazooie, either.

Yeah, as others recently said, he said in some of the earlier J&MM when Mike asks him about post SNES era and IIRC he said he dropped out of games alltogether to focus on his passion for movies during the 32/64 era. To go back to retro games and shit when he got up to college.

It's like asking why he doesn't spend money on a proper studio and just films in his garage? Why he doesn't spend money on proper equipment and just uses whatever old shit he has lying around.
