Noticing a pattern here? Nearly every expensive city in the first world has one thing in common: Urban Growth Boundaries. Meanwhile metro areas like Houston have sprawled, built roads, and have much more affordable housing despite growing far more than metro areas like Seattle which focused on increasing density, expanding public transit, and building bike lanes.

The other thing is that they like "UBGs = good because density is good", but the problem is that increasing density doesn't lower housing prices, it makes it more expensive. Urbanists think that if we build mega-blocks of housing on "underutilized" parking lots, we can magically lower housing prices. The problem is that you can't just keep building mega-blocks, because the issues of supply and demand, even in heavily-regulated markets, still apply. Developers want to make a profit on the apartments they sell, and they won't have rock-bottom apartments because they don't make money, especially on high-value areas. (That's assuming that apartment building simply grinds to a halt, not a crash involving foreclosures and insta-slums).

If they want dense areas that's anywhere close to decent, it's going to be out of price range, and if they want cheap housing, that usually tends to be rentals out in the sticks.

The other option, is of course, is state-sponsored commieblocks, but those are going to have rotten quality of life, a long waiting list (POCs and/or immigrants would go first), and any quasi-libertarian economic argument like what Marohn argues goes out the window.

I love how they cope around the downsides of riding the subway, yet bash traffic congestion as if it's the worst fate imaginable. So far their arguments against driving are mainly just that you get less exercise and have to sit in traffic sometimes. However in comparison the downsides of riding the NYC subway are that you might see a hobo jacking it and you'll probably get mugged.

If you're having to carry around a decoy wallet to avoid getting robbed, but you're still insisting that it's "not that bad", that is pure cope. My brother in Christ you live in a shithole city and refuse to admit it.

In regard to the "bicyclist" attack I've seen videos on youtube of this trend where these guys ride in packs doing wheelies and other reckless shit on the streets in front of traffic. My best guess is one of them swerved into the truck while doing something dumb and this ensued.

Either way it's somewhat disturbing to see the average redditor's propensity to justify violence for something that didn't require it. I'm just going to say that if the same people one day find themselves in a similar situation to not expect sympathy in the future when they're confronted by the mob.

I feel for the man who got attacked, but at this point if you haven't moved out of LA as a non-melonated individual it's just suicide. Hopefully he gets better in the future and gets out one day.
 
Apart from the double post, the "ILLEGAL TO BUILD!" posts have zero evidence whatsoever.

Which makes sense--everything is spoon-fed to them through videos and meme pictures, they make no effort to actually look up what the building codes actually say or anything like that. Almost every suburb has some duplexes and townhomes, and even the occasional mixed-use building. If a city has a downtown that's not totally decrepit, there's going to be at least one building that has been renovated to have loft housing above.

Mixed-use development tends to command higher rents, but if it's too high for the market and/or has some weird parking situation that the rest of the city doesn't, it will struggle.

No one has ever decided not to build an apartment building because of minimum parking laws. They just build a garage. Urbanists typically enact maximum parking laws as soon as they realize that the free market wants parking.

Seattle has a condo tower that is half empty because the city forced the developer to build only 62 parking spots for a building with 262 units, and the units without spots didn’t sell:
