All of your rumors are coming from the same source, an article in either FT or Forbes, I forget which. I don't put much stake in it anyways, its always smart to be at least a little bit panicked ahead of a huge product launch.

I know the plebs have been going on about muh single player, but take a look at something like Hogwarts Legacy, which made a shit ton of money. I don't know it has a ton of legs on it, but people still will buy a single player rpg, if the devs give them something they want.

I know that, but I also know someone IRL who will unironically shit on any game for not having a multiplayer component. Unfortunately I have to tolerate this person, but god damn the temptation to throat punch them is very real.
I can understand being that retarded on the Internet - it's truly ruined generations - but the way some people can't compute that people play video games for escapism and not having to deal with other people is shocking.

They are a metric that companies watch internally, even if they don't broadcast the numbers. If preorders are low, that's considered a bad portent for the game itself. Remember that most games will make the vast majority of their money in the first few weeks, when early adopters rush to buy them. Games that sell low during that period generally don't go on to sell well overall and get judged as failures, even if it sells over a long period of time. Part this is because, these days, games tend to get discounted relatively quickly, especially once it goes to PC, so those first weeks when the game is selling at full price is when its the most profitable.

I think the low preorder numbers are due to a few things.
1)Japanese fans, and JRPG players in general, are a little more savvy than people who buy up Blizzard or Bethesda slop. After Forspoken and FFXV, people are a little leery about XVI. Square's put out a lotta just dogshit content over the last few years and their reputation has really sunk.
2)The PS5's userbase still isn't where the PS4's was at when FFXV launched. Sure, there are plenty of units to go around now, but the adoption rate still isn't there for whatever reason.
3)Japanese players think the lead looks gayer than Cloud. I've seen sooo many Japanese dudes on twitter and futaba bitching about how faggy he looks. Not as big of an issue as the other two, but it's been making me laugh for a few days now.
I think that if FFXVI is a good game, the numbers will start to trend better over time. It might not do the numbers Square Enix wants right outta the gate, but they have put themselves in a position where they're really going to have to work to lure consumers back.

If I had a PS5 I'd probably buy Final Fantasy XVI, and I haven't bought an FF since 10.
But I don't have a PS5, and I'm not buying one for it, so maybe others are in the same boat...

I think the more likely explanation is that the PS5 just hasn't sold very well in Japan. In fact, it sells like shit in Japan. Japan is the Switch's territory, and if you want a game to make bank in Japan, you put it on the Switch, not the PS5. Even multiplats sell magnitudes more on Switch than they do on the PS5.

For sure. Like I said, the PS5's userbase just isn't very big. But Square's reputation among Japanese circles really is abysmal right now. Lots of complaints about how the Japanese audience feels abandoned by the Western pandering and whatnot.

True, but they did take a lot of inspiration from his work. I know they got a lot of people he worked with and the cutscene director for FF12.
I hope it does well. I cant imagine it not being a success in some manner when all the reviews come in. It's just that 90% of the time pre orders are worthless to get because the benefits are so tiny. They probably underestimate the value of the last min buyers like myself.
My only concern is one guy who got hands on with the game and said it the combat was basic bitch stuff compared to DMC.
If anybody doesn't want to dish out full on ps5 price check your local pawnshops. I got mine that way and its pretty nice. Used controllers can be a bitch to repair though.

It’s a fascinating trailer because I was into it until Square starting doing their formulaic FORESHADOWING at the end.
I’m not pleased to see Genesis nor do I think Cloud’s story is improved by Tifa ineffectually spilling the twist (I guess to make sure our dumbasses are caught up before we even have a chance to be lost).

See, I wouldn't have been bothered by this much if I didn't have the knowledge that Japanese developers were being coerced into having Western ethics counselors join their companies. This is clearly an influence from them.
And I guarantee you this will not be enough for ResetEra.
