Exactly. The XMen as an allegory (and those fans better be careful about going on about the politics because XMen work even better as stand ins for gun ownership than they do for the alphabet) kind of works if they are their own thing, but gets really funky in a broader superhero universe. At least the ultimate universe dabbled in it a little bit where everybody kept accusing Spider-man of being a mutant and every once in awhile he would have folks hurl mutant slurs at him.

Heck if you looked at it from a philosophical perspective, there could be some real debates. Like how would we know that Daredevil wasn't a mutant? Everyone blames the chemicals but he was around the age powers start showing up - what if it was just coincidence that he was blinded and his mutant power of enhanced senses kicked in to compensate? (within the universe i mean - obviously we know in reality because of the writer's original intent)

Then you start getting into things further down the line... like isn't Mayday Parker and Ben technically mutants, inheriting their dad's spider powers? etc

Like I said before, I enjoy comics for their goofiness and can suspend my disbelief for some of this stuff - but it has hard limits and boundaries and like... these people really don't want to push past those less they destroy the whole genre.
