The website and app aren't built for the users. The users are the product. Usability is balanced with other metrics which reddit determines to be important. How the fuck can you so badly screw up an official app, and make the main site such a bloated mess which downloads multiple megabytes of JavaScript doing who the hell knows what.
The app might seem like it sucks to the complaining redditor, but I'm sure its the best product for reddit. How correct and how well the metrics perform over time however will be tested soon. I think reddit's belief is that the kind of redditors who care about reddit as a community, care about stuff like boycotts and other meta shit are a vocal minority. Most (profitable) users just download the official app and scroll endlessly not caring about any of this cringe boycott stuff. Subs can be forced open eventually, and plebbits will go back to eating the shit fed to them, so content will eventually recover.
I believe reddit's beliefs are correct.
