The website and app aren't built for the users. The users are the product. Usability is balanced with other metrics which reddit determines to be important.
The app might seem like it sucks to the complaining redditor, but I'm sure its the best product for reddit. How correct and how well the metrics perform over time however will be tested soon. I think reddit's belief is that the kind of redditors who care about reddit as a community, care about stuff like boycotts and other meta shit are a vocal minority. Most (profitable) users just download the official app and scroll endlessly not caring about any of this cringe boycott stuff. Subs can be forced open eventually, and plebbits will go back to eating the shit fed to them, so content will eventually recover.
I believe reddit's beliefs are correct.

How many Reddit "blackouts" has there been? I feel like it's almost a yearly occasion. There was the first one in 2015 over Reddit firing whoever the hell Victoria was and the one from a couple years back over that pedo admin, then smaller ones when "net neutrality" and BLM's Blackout Tuesday were things, but this one's the biggest one by far with MOST subs on the site taking part. But really, has no one ever told subreddit mods they don't have to private their subs to protest? At least some of them are directing you to a Discord server in their private message I guess, though not enough.

i know redditors are attention whores in need of constant validation but surely given the existential threat to their favorite website they could protest it properly and stop using the website for more than 48 hours without wanting to kill themselves

the NBA sub is full of normies, the championship could be decided tomorrow, and everyone in the thread is furious. They didn't see the poll, less than 1 percent of the users voted in it, and anyone defending the decision to private is getting downvoted with people asking Reddit to remove the mods. I think this is a good look at what the actual site users believe.

The only people who support blackouts are the turboautists who start shivering at the thought of not being able to upvote their favorite goyslop for 2 days, the normies who use Reddit because they found Facebook annoying just get pissed off they can't discuss actual happenings.
I peeped into a few of the "we're shutting down" threads over the weekend and all of them were filled with comments like "omg so glad you're doing this we must show le reddit we're the power!". I didn't bother posting and archiving any of it because it's self-congratulatory drivel and would add nothing to the thread. It's not even funny, just sad.

Did you see any where subs said they wouldn't go private and just got downvoted and chastised by le Redditors for it? Or any comments where some peasant dared disagree with the blackout and was similarly flogged by their fellow Redditors

This usually happens when paramedics, nurses, etc. go on strike - if they striked for longer than a day or two then there would be an unconscionable loss of human life.

Basically what I'm saying is the unwashed tranny jannys think they are providing a life-saving public service. There's already been REEEEEEEing about how they are LITERALLY committing trans genocide by shutting town the degenerate troon subreddits for a few hours.

I followed a few subs that went private today (mainly gaming stuff and a model making sub), and i can't see them at all, trying to go to the sub directly by a link just throws up a "This sub is private" message. The only way you can gain access is if a mod gives you access, regular users can not access the sub in any way while private.

I think it would be extremely funny if Reddit told the jannies that they can have their 48 hour black out only if they agreed to get banned/loose their modship (or get banned anyway for fucking with the site). Really make the jannies put some skin in the game while looking like a bunch of losers when the mods refuse to do it.

Up and down like crazy now. Was timing out via Libreddit and if you don't use a privacy respecting frontend, you get assloads of GraphQL errors in the backend. I wouldn't be surprised if they were getting DDoSed.
