One hundred percent this. I'll fully admit that I was too much of a man child for too long. I read all sorts of books to try and figure out how I was supposed to be (I grew up in a more academic household). What you said is what I've learned about what "being a man" is. I've been sucker punched by life on a number of occasions, and those incidents shaped me into the person I am today.

The collapse in marriage and the growing acceptability of divorces really hasn't done young men any favours. For the precious few young men that do have a male role model in their life, they tend to be pretty poor examples.

Like you, I was shit at it for a long time. I grew up in a two parent family, with a father who was a reasonable male role model. He wasn't the role model that I was looking for, but are they ever? Stuff rubs off whether you want it to or not.
I think we all learn by fucking up, but I think having good male role models makes you less likely to fuck up quite so often/quite so badly.

Can you imagine growing up with any of those losers from locals for a father? They're ALL divorced or never married. They're all hanging around, simping for a sniff of the leathery old wine-mom's gusset. If any of them was your father, how could you have any respect at all for him? How could you not be humiliated by his behaviour? We wonder why kids troon out, but with fathers like Still-born and Artthecuck -- trooning out might start to look like a viable option by comparison.

I am the kind of person who probably would have chosen to be a monk back in the day but my neighbor who I quite enjoy being friends with is a father of two and I have quite a high hope for those two boys because every day he tries to impress upon them how to be a moral and functional human being.

My own father's only failings as a father figure were getting frustrated over relatively small inconviences and also crippling himself by trying to solo-lift a cast iron stove. Despite fucking up his back when I was but a wee lad he was still able to teach me many technical and practical skills that I didn't even realize were being taught to me (mostly because he'd just command me to do things)

God, I miss my old man. He taught me so much more than I realized before it was too late to thank him for it.
