The problem is Ukraine is both a fascist nazi state of ultra-nationalist extremists who genocide minorities and love Hitler, but also at the same time a globohomo tranny-loving gay democracy ruled over by a JEW. As absurd as that is it's the narrative they have lapped up and it's not by accident.

The cognitive dissonance people display in one minute saying Ukraine has to be invaded to stop nazi genocide, and the next saying Ukraine is being liberated from homo-jewish ZOG, shows how effective this method is vs the traditional "we are right here's why" propaganda.

According to DeepState, which is pretty slow on the update and conservative with reports (compared to some Pro-Ukie maps which already have Rivnopil, Piatykhaty, and others under UA control); Neskuchne, Blahodatne, Makarivka, Novodarivka, and Lobkove on the southern front alone.

It's roundabout 65km2 captured in exactly 2 weeks, which is roundabout the territory captured (re:demolished) during the RU offensive for Bakhmut which took over 9 months to complete.
So lets give the Ukrainians another month or two and see how the map changes...

I don't understand how the vatniks can say its all over for Ukraine's counteroffensive. There has been nothing but probing attacks, and not a sign of the Challenger 2's and the only Leopards we've seen were doing mine clearing. The fact Russia is barely hanging on from the Territorial Guards pushing out into the fields on trucks to see what happens is pretty telling. I expect the Ukrainians don't want a repeat of what happened at Vuhledar, so they won't commit their main force until they exactly where it should go.

That's the thing, they know how to do it just fine. The problem with Africa is that they don't have enough functional storage, meaning about a third to half of their crops spoil before they get anywhere near market, but more importantly, they keep having economically destructive wars that prevent the formation of a stable agricultural base. There are also cultural issues in many places, which prevent people rising above subsistence levels of farming. Very short version is that any surplus is immediately sucked away by parasitic relatives and nobody understands the concept of investing to expand production of increase efficiencies. This attitude pervades every levle of society, which is why africa is mostly ruled by grasping kleptocrats.

They have other problems. Part of it is deeply cultural, which is "wealth" for commoners is seen as shameful. If you have any sort of surplus your neighbors are coming to you hands out and it as huge social faux pas to turn them away - like not only is the person you denied angry, but so is everyone else and they might just mob up and burn your shit. For Africa this emergent behavior for the area, where food doesn't store well or very long, so its better to communally share resources so one person's bad harvest doesn't wipe them out. This enforced communalism is why there is always a chief or king who is in charge, collects any excess and parcels it out. You still have huge issues with this in black communities in america; this structure benefited plantation owners who allowed it reform
But this doesn't map well to long term planning, and also feeds into...

The other part is the culture of extreme parasitism and me-first.
There is a oft-told story of a Belgian (or german) couple who saw that an area of (iirc) Nigeria was growing a huge surplus of green beans, but the farmers couldn't get them to market in time to avoid spoilage (and since everyone harvested at the same time, the price would fall to almost zero at the peak). Famers couldn't invest in increasing production because they didn't have the money and their was no point - if you harvest went up it just meant hurting your neighbors. There was a newly-build highway that ran to the port, but you can't ship fresh beans. So they had the idea of building a cannery - the cannery would create jobs and also allow famers to get a higher price for their crops. It'd be a huge boost for the local economy.
The couple never built the cannery because the local governor first wanted bribes and then demanded to take over the project which he then stalled, delayed, and basically intended to say was being built but would never be completed.

The couple tried to reason with the governor by pointing out the increased farmer income and sale of the canned beans in europe would create a huge tax surplus for the province, but the Governor didn't care.
The governor's response was effectively "If I'm not getting paid bribes, then it doesn't change anything for me if the factory is open or closed? If its not giving me money directly or keeping me in power, it is pointless and shouldn't exist"

I don't think Ukraine is a great political entity. Its run by slavs and populated by slavs. But that doesn't change that one nation sent troops to a bordering nation that posed no immanent, existential threat to it because it believed it had a right to that country's territory, and that shit shouldn't be allowed. And its not like Russia is a more functional government than Ukraine's.

If it had just been political coup, or it was Russia softpowering a civil war like they'd been trying since 2014 ... yeah sure, whatever, then there'd be a point to be made about Russia just playing great power games. But regardless of how you feel about the justifications for OIF, the US didn't declare Basra as an intrinsic part of Michigan.

That's a T-55 battle role I hadn't considered, and honest probably one of the better uses.

TBCF, probing attacks are giving questionable gaines, and Ukraine really can't afford to waste men or equipment. Its also not great for morale. They are losing vehiciles and men are getting killed and captured - whatever action happened at the dam didn't result in anything.
Its all going to come down to if Ukraine can find any areas to make a move.

I wonder if those Syrian "volunteers" had anything to do with it, or at least some Russian veterans of Syria, who remembered BMPs loaded to the gills with explosives being used as VBIEDs down there.

Though in that conflict BMPs were fairly common & expendable as VBIEDs, while T-55s had more value for use as tanks for both sides. But at this stage in this war, BMPs are likely in short supply for Russians by now, but they have a glut of those old tanks. Someone realized they're useless as tanks (or even static gun emplacements), and decided turning one into a TBIED was a better idea than let the Ukrainians blow up the tank (and probably the explosives).

And since they're not allowed to use battlefield tactical nukes, this is probably the closest thing; aside from maybe how much it took to blow a dam, or rigging previously held positions with tons of explosives.

But in any case, even in the trenches a blast that size probably caused quite a few ruptured eardrums, bleeding eyeballs & other blast injuries..... holy shit. So much badaboom cooking off probably 300m or less from those trenches is definitely not good news, especially for the guy who launched that RPG.

They will have to commit to something soon to be sure. I can't help but wonder if this is another fake out to the south so they can steam roll the North instead. There is just way too much fog of war, and thus far Ukraine has not committed any of its Armored Brigades. Which is as strong an indication as any things have not really popped off yet.
