Ukrainian Defensive War against the Russian Invasion - Mark IV: The Partitioning of Discussion

The fact we went from SOF barely acknowledging the existence of units let alone details of their missions to guys writing books about their service as soon as they get out, to just straight up GoPRO footage from a conflict that's still going on will never not be fucking wild to me.

Also pour one out for the niggas at Oryx who are packing it in. Hopefully some other turboautists take up the mantle properly.

This war has taken so much from us.

Welcome to a new week and some nostalgic historical trivia!

You guys remember the T-55 VBIED posted earlier? You know the one that was very clearly immobilised before being destroyed by Ukie fire? Well what according to the Russkies it was in fact actually a totally successful and stunning attack the definitely killed a bunch of Ukrainians, even though they were all (well all except the poor fucker who fired at it) in trenches which are designed to protect from explosions like that.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has claimed that a Ukrainian stronghold was destroyed by a remotely-controlled tank packed with a huge amount of explosives, in what appears to be a new battlefield tactic.

In a post on its Telegram channel at the weekend, the ministry said that “about 3.5 tons of TNT and 5 FAB-100 bombs” were packed into the tank. FAB-100 bombs normally carry a 100-kilogram (220-pound) payload.

In a video shared by the ministry on Saturday, a Russian tank commander, callsign “Bernaul,” said he was assigned with the task of setting up the tank and executing the attack.

“About 300 meters (984 feet) away from the enemy, the tank operator put the vehicle on manual gas, directing it [to the enemy’s] direction. He jumped out and went to the rear. I stayed behind to observe, and after the vehicle approached the enemy’s positions, I detonated it by radio control,” the commander said.
“The explosion was very serious, there were a lot of explosives … as a result, according to radio intercept data, the enemy suffered significant losses,” he added.

Drone video shows the tank static after apparently hitting a mine close to Ukrainian lines. There is then a huge explosion, but it’s unclear why. A moment before the tank explodes, there appears to be a flash coming from Ukrainian positions, which may have been an attempt to destroy the tank.

On Sunday, a prominent Russian war blogger, “Voennyi Osvedomitel,” shared a video from the pro-Russia “Romanov” channel of drone footage that shows the tank detonating. Osvedomitel said the tank hit a mine before reaching its target.

“Sending an unmanned kamikaze tank filled with 6 tons of TNT to Ukrainian positions in Mariinka. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it, blown up by a mine,” he wrote.

It’s not possible to geolocate the incident but the Mariinka area of Donetsk has seen heavy fighting since the Russian invasion began.

CNN has reached out to Ukrainian authorities about the incident.
I also like how the answer to how it was driven wasn't actual remote control, or even tying a mobik to the driver's seat, but was literally just the equivalent of sticking a cinder block or 2x4 on the gas pedal of a car and slapping it in drive.

*EDIT* To avoid doubleposting, one of the Oryx dudes has said he intends to continue with ukraine shit elsewhere, which is good

That trench fighting video was brutal. Those poorly trained mobiks didn't stand a chance. The lack of training really was on display.

Some casual observations. The Russian troops were not moving in pairs even though they clearly knew the enemy was in their position. They just blundered into the Ukies piece meal. No effort to clear corners, just gormlessly walking past intersections. And the piece de LA resistance, staring down gunsights like you are on the range, in a close quarters scenario where you need to do reflex fire instead. Bet big money those poor saps were never even taught reflex fire marksmanship.

The Ukrainians sure were though.

Somehow I doubt that the Russian Church is really a cornerstone of the day to day lives of the people in Russia these days. Especially since Kiril made it abundantly obvious he is nothing more then a Kremlin Stooge. To push back against the "lol retard vatnik" narrative around here a little bit, people give too little credit to the Russian peoples awareness of what is happening. They KNOW what is happening. They just feel there is nothing they can do to stop it.

Its no wonder the Orthodox Communion is a hairs breadth from Schism with the Russian church. Eastern Orthodoxy is at a fundamental level an insurgent branch of the Christian Church. It exists to defy power. The Power of the Muslims. The power of the Roman Papacy. The power of the Asiatic Hoards. Its not a branch of Christianity that lends itself to servile obedience. Yet that is what the Russian Church seems to demand these days. And everyone knows its a lie.

This is not a religious war by any stretch. There is not a single mobik in Ukraine who goes to sleep believing he is in Ukraine because God wills it.
>these days

Try since the war between the Old and the New Order in the 17th century. Ever since Nikon captured Muscovite Orthodox Church, it has demanded an unquestionable, servile obedience
to the tsar.

To be fair, St. Tikhon of Moscow declared anathema on the Bolsheviks after the revolution. The ROC becoming servile to the USSR was more due to constant infiltration and subversion by a regime realizing they can't just kill all the faithful (after trying for a decent while). Kirill (and I believe his predecessor) are continuations of that, both pretty solidly being confirmed to be KGB assets.

To paraphrase Damon Albarn: This video
gives me a sense of enormous well-being

And then I'm happy for the rest of the day

The poor fuckers getting shot seem like rats in a maze compared to the guy taking the footage. I think I understand why they'd release this footage; if I were a mobnik I'd be pretty fucking demoralized by it. Getting hunted in your own entrenchments. Jesus.

Ka-52 tries to dump external stores, after receiving damage to it's empennage; but one AAM missile pod hangs up. The fact that they've got some altitude and things kinda just splash into the wheat field suggests those weapons pods were empty & they've left the front. They vibrate bad enough undamaged, I wouldn't be surprised if it shook itself apart midflight after the video ends.

And now for something completely different....

It goes on from there into aerial reconnaissance and comments on the use of horse-mounted cavalry and motorized infantry units as candidates for reconnaissance missions.

This probably seems like pretty basic bitch doctrine for reconnaissance and the argument might be made that they are doing all of this or have already done it and these "probing attacks" are a necessary evolution to more fully exploit the information gleaned from proper reconnaissance operations.

But, in 1933 they didn't also have:
- SIGINT well they did, they were just called "radios"
- ELINT
- MASINT from friendly countries providing satellite imagery (aerial reconnaissance could fill some of this role)
- Drones

Which is what worries me about this. They've had lots of white space to conduct intelligence collection and probing attacks. If they aren't able to close whatever intelligence gaps they might have with these attacks and get to a decisive action very soon, we have a big problem.

As a pessimist I really need to see some thrusting or even falling back in order to encircle Russian units before I can feel comfortable that this is part of a master plan
You guys remember the time when everybody was losing their mind about Ukraine definitely taking Kherson? How they warned the civilian population several times etc? The russians then put a bunch of their guys into Kherson and Ukraine then took Kharkiv in like 48 hours.

Every military analyst and their mother concluded that Ukraine would attack through Zaporizhzhia to close the route to Crimea.

I agree that these aren't reconnaissance missions, they are too big, too expensive and they know enough from other sources. At this point I'd rather assume that these attacks are Ukraine giving Russia what they waited for, the counter offensive in one direction. Then when the Russians least expect it and they have their equipment in Zaporizhzhia, they break through a line that had to send troops there. So just the good ol' bait and switch.

I still think things should be taken as they are and that the empty speculation and copuium should be left to the vatniks. We know there are counterattacks, that there's been losses, and that some ground has been taken back. Whether this is the counterattack, the start of a larger counterattack, or something else is something that we just don't know and it's probably better to take it as an unknown than to spread misinformation or falsely get hopes up.

Ukraine likely has the potential to pull off a successful counterattack. Whether they are or not remains to be seen.

This is pretty funny, because fuck journalists; Prigozhin bullshits a Politico reporter.

In a sarcastic voice message delivered in response to a request for comment, Prigozhin also sought assistance in obtaining U.S.-made sniper rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers.

While on a more serious note, the receding waters around Kherson is revealing more mines:

Ah, now that's a Juneteenth I can get behind!

Honestly, I think they're trying for a Red Army style deep battle breakthrough given the broad pushes, but smartly pulling back when things look like they're bogging down due to a lack of replacement men and machines. Keep in mind that the Russians are probably getting better at OpSec just because everyone dumb enough to be online has already had a HIMARS zero in on their device's GPS signal and end them and everyone around them. If you're the one smart guy surrounded by idiots, you're going to raise holy hell if that's what it takes to keep the tungsten rain from landing on your head, and you'll have the sergeants and lieutenants backing you up. Relatively speaking, things have been depressingly quiet on the Russian news front, after all, with just as much cope as usual but much less news, factual or otherwise.

Speaking of SIGINT, a Rivet Joint is currently prowling around the Black Sea...
