Wagner isn't a typical mercenary group. It's a setup so the Russian military can do shady stuff with ultra nationalist.

Wagner is over rated as fuck.

Before Ukraine, Wagner was a 3000 man strong shit show. They reportedly were made up of mostly SOF guys, which i can believe, a lot of SOF guys both in the west and east will take up jobs as glorified security guards when they leave the military. They weren't very good at it though, they failed in pretty much every single deployment they had in Africa to the point that the Russian government was actively defaulting on their contracts just to get rid of them. The only place they saw moderate success was in Syria where Russia already has a military presence, and even there they had more than a few fuck ups.

Ukraine was a fucking god send for Prigozhin, he could have set himself and at least 5 future generations up with the money he made. He inflated his forces up to 25k-50k soldiers depending on who you ask in a ridiculously short amount of time so their quality is probably worst now than before. The reason Wagner seemed to be the ones doing all the head-on assaults was because that was their contract. Wagner would do the most dangerous part so that whatever losses they had the MoD would not need to put it down on paper as their losses. That's all they were, just bodies. On their part the MoD provided pretty much everything else.
If the MoD really wanted to wipe them out there was very little to stop them and there was very little Wagner could do about it.

Most likely what happened is that Russia didn't renew their contract which had ended right after Bahkmut was capture, this pissed Prigozhin off and he either deluded himself or glowies lied about backing him up in an insurgency attempt and now we have the shit show currently unfolding.

That being said i think Prigozhin realized he fucked up and is now walking things back, but i think he crossed the line one too many times. Even if this does end peacefully Prigozhin is literally gonna get the axe right afterwards.
