I'm utterly confused, and maybe that was the point. I'm not smart enough to figure out Putin's plan, and I doubt I'm alone in this.

It wasn't an "op" or any sort of scheme, it was Prigozhin being a hot head, supposedly the Russian military bombed one of his camps. We don't exactly know what went on behind closed doors, whether or not he succeeded in ensuring that Shoigu and Geresimov are being shown the door. Almost certainly these two individuals are going to remain in position for the near future, but if Prigozhin did succeed you'd see both exit at some point by the end of this year or next year. Putin and the government cannot be shown to be bullied around by rogue military commanders, but they cannot just ignore the fact that parts of the military are willing to mutiny over these two guys being bad at their job.

It's hard to trust that the Ukrainians are fairly represented by the debased cities full of foreign diplomats propping up industries of debauchery. Being at a location of tension between two powers which tower over them, of course their own cultural will is neglected.
