Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

In messages seen by the BBC, Rob McCallum told OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush that he was potentially putting his clients at risk and urged him to stop using the sub until it had been certified by an independent agency.

Mr Rush responded that he was "tired of industry players who try to use a safety argument to stop innovation".

The tense exchange ended after OceanGate's lawyers threatened legal action, Mr McCallum said.

"I think you are potentially placing yourself and your clients in a dangerous dynamic," he wrote to the OceanGate boss in March 2018. "In your race to Titanic you are mirroring that famous catch cry: 'She is unsinkable'".

In the messages, Mr Rush, who was among five passengers who died when the Titan experienced what officials believe was a "catastrophic implosion" on Sunday, expresses frustration with the criticism of Titan's safety measures.

"We have heard the baseless cries of 'you are going to kill someone' way too often," he wrote. "I take this as a serious personal insult."

Lol this nigger had his monitor screens fucking screwed straight into the carbon fiber hull
:story:
That quote "don't worry, theres five inches it has to crack through" is fucking priceless.
And I'm not sure what the hell good he thought real time acoustic damage sensors would be, not much good to be warned in real time the fucking hull is about to implode.
I'm sure they worked flawlessly, Rush probably saw a bright red flashing warning sign on his screen a second or so before it collapsed.
The more I read about this shit the crazier it sounds.

Buildings and other things have collapsed since we started building them. If you have some evidence women built them all, bring it, don't sing it.

Men are entirely capable of fucking shit up, just like Stockton Rush did. The only reason he picked women to check off on his insane bullshit is they're agreeable enough to, well, agree with it.

He fired the "50 year old white man" who told him he was an idiot and was going to get everyone killed with his asshattery.

I think a lot of the women there were for diversity points. If a skilled woman with loads of experience told him that his implosion machine might kill people she'd probably be gone and replace with another woman to keep the diversity quota in balance.

Rush wanted yes men and yes women. I think the "muh inspiration" thing was a cover. But it's still great optics to make it sound like you hate 50 year old white men. Ironically Rush was 61. But he's the boss so he's special.

With such a smug, punchable face it's no wonder the sea wanted to punch the pizza sauce right out of him.

Apparently it worked well enough to get him to dump the ballast trash heap and landing skids before things went boom. At least that is the initial investigators theory based on where the mostly intact landing frame was found in relation to the debris field.

I'm not sure if the gear was screwed directly to the carbon fiber or it there was an interior liner. It will be interesting to see when the engineering plans get released as part of the investigation. But yeah those look suspiciously like the monitors were screwed onto some sort of fiberglass panel using woodscrews.

I would say they Rednecked the shit out of this thing. But most Rednecks have better mechanical sense.

A woman runs one of the better and better known builders of submersibles. She's a brilliant engineer and marine researcher. She is the recognized expert on submersibles. Rush initially brought her in to consult but dumped her when she told him Carbon Fiber was shear idiocy. I can't find the clip, but she basically said he was trying to use aerospace design solutions for a submarine.

I'm a redneck myself and I wouldn't ride that sumbitch down to the Titanic if he paid me 250K.
Look, if he'd just took it down himself alone and gotten himself killed, I'd still think he was crazy but I'd have grudging respect for a mad inventor that had a dream and had the balls to risk his life to try and reach it, but this wasn't some solo "fuck you its my life and I'm doing it" mission, the dude put other peoples lives at risk repeatedly against all expert advice and his fucking crazy half baked project got people killed, even if he took a Globohomo Paki slavemaster to hell with him, its still fucking despicable.
I don't work with carbon fiber myself and I sure as hell don't build submersibles but even I know carbon fiber is only strong under tension, something its particularly good at, but under compression its weak as hell, the only thing withstanding those compressive forces was the fucking epoxy bond it was laminated with. And thats without the insanity of using fucking glue to fix the end caps, end caps it looks like they assembled in a goddamn wharehouse without any provision for a sterile environment.
It was reckless as shit from start to finish, and if his estate gets sued, those waivers ain't gonna save them, the waivers indemnity presupposes that all reasonable steps were taken to avoid gross negligence, seems to me anyone that knew what they were doing and tried to make this circus safer was shown the door.
Its insane hubris.
You'd think a guy who was obsessed with Titanic would know what that word means.

Every expert told him how dangerous & insane his idea was but he ignored everyone & even got salty & sued.

...I think Rush was a lolcow.

  • attention whore :agree:
  • giant bloated ego:agree:
  • likes to sue :agree:
  • spends his money on garbage :agree:
  • narc:agree:
  • liar :agree:
  • thinks he knows better than experts :agree:
  • delusional :agree:
  • death by hubris :agree:
  • obsession :agree:
Who knows what other lolcow qualities will be revealed.

Twitter's got all kinds of schizo theories going off left and right, everything from "One of the people on the board of OceanGate, the astronaut Scott Parazynski, had connections to Ghislaine Maxwell", which appears to be true, shockingly enough, as well as the typical "OMG ILLUMINATI OCCULT HUMAN SACRIFICE RITUAL AT THE WRECK OF THE TITANIC TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LEYLINES THERE!!!" type of nuttery.

It's always something with these people isn't it? Doesn't mean it makes any sense though.

Fucking ley lines of all things.

I'm not an engineer or anything but even I know that screwing something into carbon fiber like that weakens it's structural integrity. The more I learn about this, the more I have to wonder what the fuck was this guy on to fuck up this badly?

Like "Mad Mike" Hughes. The flat Earther that built himself a steam powered rocket, flew up 2000 feet, lost his parachute and came down with a crash. It's a fucking stupid way to die but you need to give the man some respect for not only building it but going up in it.

I do (or have done), layups and destructive stress testing on CF, and you’re not wrong. The method of the filament wind shown in one of their videos also looked very dubious to me. And the glued on end caps may have been the only way to achieve that but yeah. if tube didn’t just outright disintegrate, it probably eventually deflected enough (they said 4” of hourglass shape was normal!) to peel that joint open, or crack the composite next to the bond.

Totally narcissistic and hubristic. Many people told him he was fucking op, both within the industry and his own experts. I’ve worked for bosses like that and if it’s their brainchild these guys will dig in their heels until the bitter end. Never seen a better illustration than this.

Really boggles the mind when you hear people consider a bunch of worthless shitskins drowning a great tragedy. Like what great benefit were they going to bring to Europe if they made it? Does everyone just pretend like they have any possibility of contributing to society in any way? Is there a SINGLE reason we would be better off with them here? It's like the old senile woman letting every stray cat in the city come in her house, eating and shitting and pissing until she dies and the house has to be condemned and demolished.

I want to see a man on the street interview sketch. Ask some white baby-faced university kids if they'd prefer their city had a +10% black population. Okay how about +15%? +20? +100%! Would they even allow themselves to set a cutoff point? Like why any at all?
Europe lost all those proverbial rocket scientists aka creepy brown men and youth who hassle women, girls and little boys. I think the based Greek coast guard minimised the help for these low value people, so all those astrophysicists became fish food.

So multiple longtime submarine experts, both men and women, told him his shit was fucked and he refused to listen?

Yeah this dude was 1000% a lolcow.

Nonono! He was a visionary and thinking outside the box. Isn't that how such tech geniuses as Elon Musk, Steve Jobs and the rest of them made it big?

But seriously when actual experts with submarines say you're fucking up and this sub would be rated for one dive and you ignore them you deserve everything you get. The bad part is having to kill a bunch of people in the process.

James Cameron is probably the better example. He currently holds the record for deepest submersable dive. His trip to the Challenger Deep. He built a 1 man craft specifically designed for 1 man and 1 trip. Engineered the fuck out of it to make sure it survived. And piloted it himself. So he would be the only one turned to paste. Yeah it's a bit narcisitic. But you gotta give props for being willing to risk only yourself.

The box is usually there for a reason.

When the "box" is about staying alive in the literal abyss, the most deadly place on Earth, thinking outside the box basically equals "what retarded shit can I do to get dead?"
James Cameron is probably the better example.
James Cameron is the Sane World version of "what if I want to do something insanely dangerous and survive" who actually did that.

Stockton Rush is the Clown World version of "how do I die like a retard?" I mean was. Because lol dead.
