I've brought up a few times before how Ralph fits the cycle of a domestic abuser like a glove, but May leaving is such an excellent example of all of this.
May leaves, Ralph promises to change, takes positive actions. Apologises to her family, keeps it civil. He's gonna change and she's going to come back - and it's totally, 100% real. He means it this time, he's really changed as a person.
Now, at this point either May goes back and after like a month of sobriety Ralph slips back into his normal behaviour, or she doesn't...
In the event that the recriminations and promises of change don't work, abusers tend to vary up tactics and go back to trying to escalate their abusive behaviour. Now, Ralph hasn't directly attacked May yet - but he did say some pretty derogatory stuff about her fucking him today, and that does seem to be a change in how he talks about her.
Point is, Ralph is realising, slowly, she's probably never come back. Hence, he's back to attacking the family, is talking about her nastily, and I believe is probably back on the substances. Not too much, not yet - just a few modelos to take the edge off... But this is Ralph.
