The Legend of Heroes Series - Possibly The Most Underrated JRPG Series

They all do have speed up which is a godsend in these games, so that should be more than enough. Do share your ventures as you go through them.
Nisa has it's problems. But, with this series you really just have to pick your poison.
All the good people who did their job bavk when XSeed was in charge are long gone so you have fan translations from shitty people or official translations from shitty people. Hell, one of the geofront guys had a massive sperg out on twitter last week while larping as a "professional" translator.

You just can't have nice things anymore it seems.

I do constantly dread the translations inserting agenda pushing. Though for now it seems fine for the most part outside of a few eyebrow raisers and I'm not willing to learn written Japanesse.

But yes, the day Rean says trans lives matter will be a very shitty day

We'll get our own Brigette moment in due time and it'll suck. But, it's worth enjoying the relative peace we have now.

So I'm getting a femboy will be introduced in Kuro...

So it has to dodge 2 bullets, 1 that an activist translator doesn't shove his retardation forcefully and 2 that even if the translation job is solid, that Falcom proceeds to give 0 shits about stupid westeners. Really hope trannyfatigue saves the scenario...

Actually she's got lady parts. She pretends to be a boy to avoid human experimentation or something IDK probably stuff they're going to cover in Kuro 2.

Sounds like a Naoto situation then. I imagine in bonding events she will show her actual femininity to the protag. So as long as the Trannylators don't get their hands on it it should be fine, but yeah, and if she indeed goes full "look at me like a woman protag" she won't really be much of a Tranny icon either. So I'm gonna be optimistic on this one.

I've never played above hard any of the games, I expect your life will be miserable till you get a reliable evasion tank, but god speed you mad lad.

More tales from my progression

Spoilers till discovering the namesake of the game

OK, so in the Reverie, it does feel gamey as fuck how they justify it not fucking with the central plot with "you forget you are inside! but you also don't remember the outside!" but I guess they just couldn't think of something as convenient as in Sky 3rd. Aside from that it's a comfy enough area, I am intrigued why X deemed necessary to activate it, though my gut is telling me the Ouroboros grandmaster seeing how she is so prominent in art and has a thread in her hands.

Started getting my first sidestories, for now ignoring the Rixia with Swain and Nadia till I finish reading their book, but did do chapter 1 of the magical girl Alissa thing. It's stupidly hokey but it just makes me smile. The mechanics are a barebones shooter, but lets see if it gets more interesting in further chapters.

Also rediscovered the Vantage card game, had a rough game remembering the rules, but then Claire shit on my with utter contempt so will revisit that later.

Also, unlocked my first character, initially it was a groan since I don't particularly care for Angelica, but her order is fucking savage and I will be using and abusing that shit for a long time since insight is always gold and anything that ups crit rate is kino in my book.

Narrative sense... well my theory about C being Lechter has been shot down hard. I'm still hoping it's not Crow and Rean going "nah, it can't be him" gives me slight hope, but I just cannot see it being another character at this point. Well that, or a "Crow from when before he died" or some weird jank. I'd also love the twist of it being Olivier, but that would involve a lot of convenient shit and the man has never ever been alluded to being a swordsman. I guess it could also be a new character as well.

The new characters I'm enjoying, Nadia and the doll specifically I find incredibly charming. It was also good to see more old faces, I'm still amazed at how Millium went from one of my most hated characters to one of my more liked through all of Cold Steel and I do find her interactions with Jusis and Altina endearing.

Spoilers end of chapter 2 Lloyd

So Cao is being a cunt again, not that big of a surprise, what is a surprise is the pretty much everything coming from Garcia's mouth. He could not have been clearer in saying "there is more to everything, I have ulterior motives that I cannot disclose at this time, I must act like a big bad though it's probably not my endgame due to plot convenience", got the same vibes from Dieter and wouldn't be surprised if Ilya was the same and just hamming it up because of course she would chew any scene she could be in. I did have to redo the Cao vs Garcia fight since I forgot about the turn limit for extra RP by not wanting to let them go into enhanced at the same time, second time around I just brute forced the fuck out of both (Angelica's order again was pure gold there). Also, nice to see best doggo again.

Only "issue" I'm having is since parties are huge and orbment administration is such a pain I'm pretty much just going with whatever is on everybody with some tweaks here and there but for now it's been fine. I am playing in normal mode since I started in hard and everything just felt like sponges. May bump it back to hard once I get my usual cold steel setup again (Rean, Emma, Muse and Altine abusing the high speed spellcasting order while Rean facetanks everything else with evasion) though odds are I will mostly just be rotating constantly.

Yeah, if you feel like your team is a little underpowered, you should probably head back into the Reverie Corridor. The intention is that you'll be getting your best quartz and gear from there. It's really the only reasonable way to keep all the units the game throws at you geared.

End of chapter 3 spoilers

Go me, I managed to deduce C was Rufus before he went mask off, it kept nagging me how mechanically it just made sense to be Jusis due to swords and wind orbments, but well, clearly it couldn't be him... till I considered that Rufus ticks all of those boxes, plus is also a playful little fucker so his back and forth with Lapis works out and his private little chat with Nadia makes sense with him. As well as having motivation and a reason to do things in the downlow once Lechter was dropped as suspect.

I'm more than happy with Rufus being the third protag. And well, really liking his team as well, now that I read the full 3 & 9, have gotten bigger appreciation for Nadia and Swin (as well as understanding that the dork with the helmet is either the overseer or a somebody that managed to gather all his equipment and is emulating him). The extra scene with Rixia and those two was also surprisingly wholesome and I find it incredibly funny that 3 & 9 is basically a published hit job that happened to become a fucking best seller. Also, dissapointed if Ilya is only collaborating because she has a Black Factory mask on, was hoping for a darker angle of having to sell a bit of her soul to recover so well and so quickly, but who knows, might be a bait and switch.

Also, happy to see Ringo again. The craziest of kids is their pilot is the cherry on top though I do believe Cerberus not being trained to pilot will be their downfall.

Still having a great time in summary. Biggest sin the game has right now though is that none of the new music has actually stuck out to me. We have come back to Nord which has one of the best themes in Cold Steel 1 yet the rendition here is pure meh. Combat music is fine, but nothing that I can properly re member right now. Hope I get at least a few good tracks once the credits roll, but for now it's the lowest point of the game.

Got to the finale of Azure, god damnit it's a better starting point to a new game than the beginning. In general one of the issues I have with the series is how long it takes for the plot to finally happen. I hope eventually we get to beat up Ouroboros in the series because so far they are pretty massive villain sues.

Also having the villains be bankers is pretty based

My absolute slackjawed face when I see the ending reel. I instantly start Cold Steel 1 and process that I won't know what comes after Azure till Cold Steel 3. But yeah, that ending was ballsy congrats, you didn't sell your soul and sacrificed your daughter for independence and security, get invaded and occupied, great way to go about it but fuck me what a gut punch. Music is also fantastic in there. Though I'd say zero and azure have some of the strongest tracks in the whole series (though sky the 3rd is still my goto).

Accidentally jumped over the ending when I thought it would be just credits... Anyways it was pretty good finale overall but I sure glad the series stopped with "this NPC turned out to be a traitor", though sadly it was replaced by too much anime protagonist syndrome. Now I can play Cold Steel 3 that's been waiting on my shelf for a year, hopefully it would be better than previous two games but dear god the character bloat is unreal. Also weird the Trail 2 and Azure spoil each other.
I liked Rixia best, had the most interesting story and development (not to mention being a big chested girl with a huge sword), most of the cast was very static after getting their character progression in the first game. Poor Noel got shoved to the sidelines after being the character least connected to the final level.

Finished Reverie, now there's a Trails-shaped hole in my heart for a few years as usual, lmao. Really enjoyed the game, I'm going to need to rest on it for a bit before I can say anything of substance. Really enjoyed the story though, as usual I teared up a bit and not necessarily at the moments I'd retroactively expect to have teared up. C's crew definitely stole my heart quite a bit. Really quickly, and definitely Reverie spoilers and potential spoilers for all games-

The tagalong thing and united fronts are super fun. I kept on forgetting about them until chapter 2, but I adapted super quickly when I started to encounter more challenges.
Rufus' character arc was masterfully done imho, he's a character I've been intrigued by since CS1 and I'm so glad we finally get to delve into his story. This was the perfect timing to introduce him as a PC and I feel like my next replay of the CS arc will be richer for having played this. His and Lapis' scenes stole the show for me, as well as some interactions between him and Jusis.
NGL Ilya's storyline didn't resonate with me at all, I did really like the moment where Rixia leapt to her aid at the Ancient Battlefield and backed off at the last second, but that was the peak of my interest of the storyline. Plus, I noticed it in CS4 but again now, but how did the dancing animations seem more charming in the Crossbell arc than with the new engine? They were kind of cringe then but had soul and personality, whereas I was just snickering during the whole throw-leg-up+roundhouse kick+pivot routine.
Walking through the Rosenberg studio was awesome after hearing so much about the way Joerg has it set up. Loved it. I was also retarded and had to retry like 3-4 times the escape from the burning RF factory because I was looking for treasure and also had the left touchpad fast forward pressed down which didn't help at all.
I cried a bunch during Rufus' scenes, and weirdly enough, I inexplicably burst into tears during the main song movie that plays after waiting on the start menu once learning of C's identity and seeing him dueling with his simulacrum, even I couldn't understand why I was so emotional at the time. The scene eventually came up during gameplay, and seeing Rufus' growth and perception of himself changing made me tear up... again. women b like.
I definitely inwardly shrieked when Rufus took that step back at the retributive tower, btw. I forget about Trails survival statistics, but since I love the SSS, Crow, Millium, and Rufus, I'd be pretty pissed if this is a case of alternate realities and the ''true'' one being the bad ending, though. I tire of people never dying when it would be a satisfying arc for the character, but I get that the moral is that you're never truly alone as long as people love you, form bonds with you, and care for you. It's a bleak and cutthroat world so I won't shop for heartbreak in my games, I guess. Like I said, there's still the opportunity to reveal that all the ooperator re-writes (KeA saving the SSS, the divine knights and Franz helping Rean, Crow, and Millium, Rufus being saved, yannow) didn't actually happen so if that's the case, I'll enjoy the idea that they're alright for a bit longer.
People complain about the gacha-adjacent system online but I didn't find it annoying at all. As usual, Pom Pom Party and Vantage Masters is super fun, my husband fell in love with Bug Battle Beauty Mesuking's mechanics in Yakuza and stuck through the slog of 3-4+Ishiin because he knew the game would capture him in the same way eventually, and it paid off with subsequent titles- this would be ''my game'' if Trails ever became a slog. They made a perfect game for my Slay the Spire, Inscryption loving ass as just a side game, so I know they can capture the magic in some way even if something they make is eventually a miss for me. Magical Girl Alisa was pretty cringe but I'm also not a slope so it's not meant for my sensibilities, and it was fun to play after fast forwarding the dialogue so who cares. The new soldat game, I was horrible at and had to restart stage 2 like 10 times on easy mode lmao. The beach vacay thing overstayed its welcome because I wanted all the cosmetics. Loved Beryl's quiz game though!
The daydreams were amazing. I LOVED Freddy's- it's not necessarily the best and plenty more stand out, but that one was just so silly and fun and gave me chitinous shells when I needed them for the recipe main missions.
I missed the sidequests and bonding events, but this was a lengthy enough game as is. I thought that all girls initially saying something potentially alluding to a relationship kind of cheapened the choice I made from CS1-4, but I also don't particularly care about the dating mechanism so it's whatever. I miss canon romances, harem setups just make me miss the idea of only one relationship for the main character to deepen and miss seeing reactions from other party members and in-game loved ones. Seeing Olivier and Shera, Randy and Mireille, Pearl and Scott, etc. making their own decisions on the trajectory of their specific lives together just makes me wonder what could have been for Rean and even Lloyd.
Estelle SUCKS in combat which I don't like because something I find super valuable in these games is that you can break it with any character combo and stacking a build is super easy, but even though I wanted to use Estelle a bit more through my cycling of teams, I found it hard to justify because anything she does, another character can do better and there is no build I landed on that made her preferable to someone else. I just play with characters I like, but there's so many I like that pack a better punch so it feels kind of hollow to pick her just because I like her. She does p well as a single target breaker but that's just not a scenario I often encounter.
I've disliked Claire her entire character's run, but this one softened me on her enough that I let her have quartz whereas I usually remove them all to be very clear to myself that I don't anticipate using her, lmao. I let her have a twisted twintail cosmetic item or whatever it's called to make amends. I also collected all the cosmetic items I could and used them with abandon, except the hair colors. I can never get used to the different hair colors.
I do like that many characters get a chance to shine at different points. Couldn't get enough of Ash in 4 because he was so interesting and well-developed, had him in my party at all times to hear his dungeon lines and perspectives on the events, and I rarely had him in my party this time around because I wanted to hear more from other characters. I think the VA did amazing work in the English localization, even better than in 4 potentially, too bad he's a semi-lolcow as most VAs seem to be.
ATS Crow is just insane, I did some unbelievable damage with the right setup and his self-buff.
My dream team during TRC Coda was Musse, Crow, Wazy, and Renne. Artes reign supreme as always on Nightmare difficulty, and I can't say I love Musse, but she was great at cycling between support/healing and casting for damage. Musse, Wazy, and Renne had infinite EP and Crow does great work as a physical attacker too when needed. It's just funny how I started CS1 as a crafts-centered player and now I'm all about the arts, which has completely changed my ideal party composition.
The end boss was really easy with teams A and C, and a NIGHTMARE with team B because I went in blind and didn't want to reload and re-outfit and quartz my characters. Thank God I had Kurt in there and hadn't used any of my incense items during the rest of gameplay, lol.
Playing as McBurn is stupidly fun, he's so cringe yet so fun and I'm glad I don't have to mod him in. I also don't get why everyone thinks Kurt is boring, I find him to be super endearing. Also, Lechter's mystery card (?) craft is bar none the most fun I ever have in a video game lmao, what a treat to instant death a miniboss.
At the end, I thought the Reverie Corridor overstayed its welcome a tiiiiny bit but I think I was just hungry for more story content. I understand why it had to be at the end for plot reasons, but I wish there would have been another playable ''plot'' section after. No matter. I'll just never be ready for a Trails game to end.
George, zzzzzzz. G. Nome the gnome, dig your way back in there.

Anyway. I had a good time and definitely got my money's worth. Hope everyone enjoys!
