what anime could you recommend to a fella? - all the other threads are dead as fuck so im making a new one

Patlabor

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Both Vampire Hunter D movies

Demon Slayer (It's goofy in parts but I'm generally enjoying it)

Requiem from the Darkness aka 100 Stories

Desert Punk

Demon City Shinjuku

Wicked City

Devilman

The 1980 Astroboy series

Robotech - I know it's blasphemy but I have that sentimental attachment

And Macross Frontier right? Right?
I haven't got the opportunity yet to fully watch it in spite I've enjoyed the franchise's appearance in Super Robot Wars Z2 (a tactical strategy game on Playstation Portable). Between this, Escaflowne (watched this as a kid in the late 90's/early 00's, so memories are very fuzzy) and Slayers (among several others), I still have quite a backlog of anime stuff to watch.

I actually really enjoyed SpyxFamily

If you enjoy more "historical" anime Raven of the Inner Palace (based on Chinese legends and concubines) was really nice and Natsumes book of friends is a good one . It's based on jap lore but all the yokai and shit something different.

Seconding Legend of the Galactic Heroes, adding Space Battleship Yamato.

Watch jojo season 2 and 4, if you like them watch season 3, the rest you can skip.

Heresy! Part-skipper!

Mushi-shi is my favorite. It's an episodic series with one main character, who travels from village to village resolving supernatural problems that arise from the actions of spiritual creatures called 'Mushi'. I love it because it is completely devoid of many anime tropes, which I find to be really grating.

I also like the movie 'Children who Chase Lost Voices', it has a neat feel to it, a really cool execution (hollow earth), and an interesting story.

And I like a lot of Studio Ghibli movies, and Berserk. Mostly I try to avoid that formulaic 'humor' that you see in a lot of anime cause I find it more annoying than funny.

Heresy! Part-skipper!
Parts 1, 5 and 6 are garbage, people only think they are good because of the memes, and 3 is debatably good but drags on for way too fucking long and on the whole they are more likely to make someone stop watching altogether than make them want to watch more.

Parts 2 and 4 are the only parts that are properly paced with a coherent plot and non plank characters.

Sorry jojo bros, but at this point jojo is like star wars, there's more bad of it than good and the only reason people think its good is because of the memes.

The problem with skipping parts is that parts do setup things in the later parts, people that say you can read or watch parts without the context of earlier parts are retarded. I can't imagine jumping around to part 4 without the context from part 2 and 3. If anything part 5 is the only part besides 7-9 that can stand alone and I'd argue that part 5 has the second best pacing as everything was constantly moving forward in it and the only negative in my opinion was Giorno's personality as the MC.

What context do you really need for part 4? Jotaro and Joseph's backstories are barely relevant to the actual story, all you need to know is that they are josuke's distant family and it more or less works as a standalone. Sure, knowing who Joseph used to be adds to the amusement factor, but its just an extra spice and not nessesary for the story and since dio doesn't come up Jotaro's personality (if he had one) and backstory are irrelevant other than he's a buff dude looking for a magic artifact (that itself was mostly irrelevant in the previous parts anyway).

Part 1 is arguably way more significant to part 2, but part 4 is more or less a standalone.

The issue is that part 5 is just a week long nonstop gauntlet of murder leading to a boss with next to no character development, locations or story. Its more or less the same as part 3 (a gauntlet to the boss), except part 3 had a shitload of varied locations and amusing characters to fill the void, while part 5 is 5 planks of wood murdering their way through an urban enviroment until they get an asspull victory out of nowhere.

My opinion on whether a character is relevant to the plot is whether that character can be replaced by another character and I think that Jotaro and Joseph alongside their backstories are irreplaceable because otherwise you get a character disconnected from the Joestar family. I also don't think that any of the parts are standalone or skippable, I just think that 5 is the one with the most easily replaceable parts to make it standalone though this might not be a good thing.

They are relevant to the plot insofar that they are josuke's family, but what happens in their parts isn't. Vampires don't exist in part 4 so part 2 is irrelevant, and dio is only relevant for 1 minor character (okyuasu's dad) so part 3 is irrelevant as well.

I don't disagree that part 5 is the most standalone, I just think its straight up bad.
