what anime could you recommend to a fella? - all the other threads are dead as fuck so im making a new one

  • Hajime no Ippo (Boxing anime)
  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Slice of Life about a young professional shogi player, very laid back and you don't need to know the rules)
  • Tatami Galaxy (College student in a time loop situation)

  • Agree

Watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, period, it's probably the best anime
Watch Beck! Mongolian Chop Squad if you're into music
Watch Redline if you're into animation
Watch Black Lagoon if you like Tarantino flicks
Watch Don't Bully Me, Miss Nagatoro or My Dress Up Darling if you're a foreveralone permavirgin.
EDIT:
Watch FLCL if you really want to experience a psychedelic trip without the required drugs. Also to jam to the Pillows.

Redline is so fun. I would kill for a Lynchman and Johnnyboya spinoff.

Space Battleship Yamato
The original, not the remake. The universe punishes treason and sacrilege.

I haven't seen a lot of anime but by far the most enjoyable one was Naoki Urasawa's "Monster", a kind of crime thriller tackling some interesting moral/philosophical questions,
Probably the most retarded story I've suffered through (I read the mango tho). Woke and gay.

Steins;Gate is a strong time travel story, with prequal and sequal series
The runner-up.

I played the VN. It is extraordinarily unimaginative and lazy and every character in it is retarded. The anime is supposedly one branch of the VN.

It's "But I did eat breakfast: The Game". Very cool premise, goes absolutely nowhere with it, replaces it with a different (worse) time travel mechanic, punches you in the balls for trying to think. The protagonists are supposed to be scientists, geeks and fans of a score of time-travel stories it name-drops, but they are completely incapable of thinking, designing effective experiments, recalling the lessons and concepts of the name-dropped stories, or not telling every random stranger they have a working time machine. Whenever there's an unexpected development, it's because the writer is just too stupid. There's 1 (one) joke in it, 30 hours in.

Also: troon shit, pedo shit, incest, perving on a (genuinely) mentally disabled child.

This review of a related game applies to Steins;Gate, but for the protagonist, who is retarded, too. Choice quote:

It's hard to explain without spoiling, but if you've ever experienced a bait-and-switch VN where everything seems like a mundane high school slice of life until it hits you in the face with a harrowing and total mindfuck reality, this story feels like the exact opposite of that, which it turns out is not nearly as interesting.

Never watch anything with the Clannad art style.

Sad if true.

i completely forgot i made this thread last night but thanks everyone for your anime recommendations, i'll be sure to "not pirate" it and check them out. i personally don't like long stories unless it's interesting

nerd

Have you considered suicide
yes multiple times
why don't you look at naked men and watch your dick get hard?
might be a little less gay ...
i already do that faggot with the socks on
Hellsing Ultimate is what turns boys into men
i picked this one as my first anime to watch and i was enjoying it for the 20 minutes into it. a little too edgy but i wasn't turned off by the show. not sure if this is me being purely retarded but there's a scene where one of the main characters is wearing an SS uniform. it took me a while to notice it but when I did, I said "huh kinda looks like hitler" then I googled it and there's nazi shit in the anime.

i will say though, for it having nazi stuff, not bad anime so far

Gonna list a strange one that hasn't been said yet:
Gregory Horror Show is a fantastic psychological Horror series revolving around the idea of purgatory. The entire look and feel of this show is that of a PS2 horror title (ironic as it did get a PS2 horror game made by the Resident Evil team), with an art design that is similar to that of Animal Crossing. The entire set up of the series is the strangest thing I have ever seen with it being 100% in first person like it is a video game. Highly recommend as the entire series is available on YouTube, including the previously lost Gallery Tour, given subtitles finally.

Infinite Stratos. Dub.
Yes, DUBBED.
Reason being is that the character's respective countries are thick with their accent and it differentiates them from each other more. The protagonist is a different breed of moron though. The tribute and homage in mecha designs for the characters make up for it. I guess?

Zero No Tsukaima. (Familiar of Zero) It is a good isekai anime which was done before it became such a norm-du-jour. Dubbed only exists for season 1. The rest are subbed. Either way, good stuff. It's like Harry Potter but the guy is out of his element and adapts. My goodness, does he adapt and become the hero he is meant to become.

I've only seen the anime, but between Steins;Gate and Higurashi, I've started to think that any anime based on a VN is probably bad (though weirdly I did like Clannad despite the artstyle... I then wound up disliking pretty much every other KeyAni project I've seen tho).

And yeah, that's one problem I had with both Stein and Hig--the characters are fucking retarded, their problems all have easy solutions that you the audience immediately figure out, and then the show goes on to valorize the characters for doing the absolute most retarded thing they could. Its like VN authors have a totally fucked idea of how things can and should work.

Like, imagine you and three friends are stuck in a jail cell, and any one of you who tries to actually escape gets punished, but then the retarded guy who suggests standing on your head and counting to thirty turns out to be divinely rewarded because a meteor falls and blows a hole in the cell walls as soon as you finish counting. That's what these shows are like.

@skykiii Regarding Robotech, anime fans and weebs don't hate Robotech in and by itself. They hate Harmony Gold who produced Robotech and along with Tatsunoko Production had been playing fuck-fuck games with copyrights on who owns the Macross copyrights outside of Japan since the first airing of Robotech. Which prevented any new Macross series* from being legally available outside of Japan. If Sony hadn't came in to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory i.e. saving Harmony Gold's ass. Studio Nue would've eventually won that copyright case in U.S. court.
Sony for reasons wants to do a live-action Robotech movie as opposed to doing a live-action Macross movie and can't do that while the (copy)rights are still in dispute.

While a lot of it is Robotech being a victim of raging at HG, I have seen people who genuinely dislike Robotech. This tended to be more true in the days of early internet though, when there were more weebs who had a "Japan can do no wrong and baka Americans always screw up their perfect art!" mentality going around.

These days, I do occasionally see people just assume Robotech must be bad because.... someone somewhere said so.

It's only really Southern Cross that got edited to death. Macross and Mospeda parts are fine. In some ways, the Robotech soundtrack is actually better than Macross's. Macross's Dogfighter is fine, but there's a lot of temp track quality songs in that soundtrack like Viva! Zentradian. In contrast, most Robotech tracks use their orchestra more effectively and more innovatively.

Disagree as the old days in the late 70ies to early 00ies the sentiment was FUCK YOU for censoring and infantilizing everything that is anime, manga and games. Which the censorship and moralizing infantilizing alterations being done with "localizations" that is still happening as of this post. It was never about "Japan can do no wrong" as it was all about the anime companies and govt censorship boards believing and acting like they know better than you.

Which in a way Robotech didn't get censored all that much compared to other anime that were airing before, same time and after it aired. Southern Cross got blunt of chopping and editting as it do to hit the requisite syndication number for epsiodes for Robotech to be aired continuously later as reruns.

Wasn't Southern Cross the bad part anyway? Macross always has its fans and Mospeada had its cult following but from what I've heard, Southern Cross was just crap until the Robotech edit came in.

Everyone recommending LotGH is correct.
I also recommend the 1997 edition of Berserk (do not watch the memorial edition for gods sake watch berserk 97')
Watch it before you read the manga so you can both be furious at what was cut from the best adaptation but also appreciate kino.

If you want something fast paced to suit your tastes try Chainsaw Man
