what anime could you recommend to a fella? - all the other threads are dead as fuck so im making a new one

Samurai Champloo is the only anime I've ever watched and actually liked. Any other anime I've tried to watch I get this uncomfortable, painful, cringey feeling. Similar to how I'd feel if I sat down and watched Blues Clues by myself.

It's only really Southern Cross that got edited to death. Macross and Mospeda parts are fine. In some ways, the Robotech soundtrack is actually better than Macross's. Macross's Dogfighter is fine, but there's a lot of temp track quality songs in that soundtrack like Viva! Zentradian. In contrast, most Robotech tracks use their orchestra more effectively and more innovatively.
Strong agreement here. When I finally watched Macross, I was shocked that A) basically it was little different and B) the music--which I assumed had to be awesome (because Robotech's was good and Japan always does better music, right?).... was actually kind of a let-down.

In a particular unpopular opinion of mine... this includes Minmei's songs. Cheesy as they are, I can remember most of Robotech-Minmei's music. Japan-Minmei just sounds like average Jpop.

Also, Mospeada has one scene (in the Mint's Birthday episode) that is legit kind of uncomfortable to watch. Robotech did well editing that shit out.

Wasn't Southern Cross the bad part anyway? Macross always has its fans and Mospeada had its cult following but from what I've heard, Southern Cross was just crap until the Robotech edit came in.
That's the reputation, but having watched it, a part of me wonders if it wasn't just burnout from the audiences.

Gotta remember that in Japan, Macross forms a sort of spiritual-trilogy (IE not storyline connected) with Orguss and Southern Cross, with SC being the final part.

I've watched all the shows that make up Robotech (plus some of Orguss) and honestly... well, it says something that Mospeada was the only one I finished in its entirety. They all have their virtues but none of them feel especially stand-out to me, especially now that I know 1980s Japan was practically oversaturated with mecha shows that were all trying to be either the next Gundam or the next [insert popular Super Robot show here as that's a genre I don't know much about].

.......

Thread tax by the way, for anyone who IS into eighties anime and giant robots in particular, some absolute chad actually put DVD ISOs of the incredibly hard to find Licensed US releases of Beast King Golion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV onto the Internet Archive!

If you're thinking "Aren't these the shows used to create....?" yes, yes they were.

Don't put off watching Dairugger just because you've heard people badmouth Vehicle Voltron, BTW. I can't speak for the dubbed version (Vehicle Voltron was one of those things I never knew about until the internet) but in Japanese its pretty good, basically watching like a mix of Star Trek and Macross but in the format of a Super Robot show.

(Don't take my not defending Golion for my not liking it--its just that the show everyone gravitates towards anyway, hardly needs a spokesman).

Was in the same position as you once, i'm not into anime at all, but im so tired of watching the same shit all over again. Got recommended a lot of stuff but i just couldnt get into it. I'd list them, but im pretty sure most of them have already been mentioned before in this same thread.

Anyways, i have to admit that Berserk looks awesome. Wanna get into it but the fact that it will never get finished now just kinda throws a wrench into it...

Might as well ask for recommendations again. so this is what ive watched and hopefully some kiwis can help descipher a brother's tastes better:

DB/DBZ: Watched the whole thing as a child, still remember it fondly today except for how dragged out some of the fights were.

Devilman Crybaby: Maintained my interest, felt like i had missed a couple of episodes by the time i reached the end. Did love the ending but not sure i'd ever watch it again though.

Rosario Vampire: Have no idea nor have any recollection about how i found out about this one. I know shit like this was made for cooming, but i found it entertaining. Protagonist sucked but who cares about him.

Do the Phoenix Wright adaptations count...? I liked it, but that's probably just because i love the games.

That's all i can remember for now, any recommends will be appreciated!

I guess for you I'd suggest love Hina and yu yu hakusho. They both intersect with Rosario Vampire in different ways and getting into anime would best be done by looking at what you found memorable and would watch again.

@skykiii and to whom maybe be interested here's a history video of the Southern Cross anime. With it's background I wouldn't go on defending it that much.
Spoiled as parts of it are not quite NSFW but will got those questions should someone looks over your shoulder.

Thread tax: Original Vampire Hunter D, while VHD: Bloodlust might be better, one should watch the first one first to know who TF is Vampire Hunter D is in the first place.
Will be the odd man out and recommend the original Full Metal Alchemist, or the first half when it was following the manga.

Other anime not already mentioned
Fatal Fury movie
Platinumhugen Ordian
Hades Project Zeorymer
Soultaker

The first 2 seasons of Ghost in the Shell SAC are as good as it gets without any weebery/faggotry nor pedoshit, unlike half the shit posted ITT

Also the original LOGH is you want anime that doesnt looks like anime
Legend of Galactic Heroes - space opera kino, basically Star Wars if it was written by Sons of Liberty-era Kojima.
Did you even watch the series?

.... SAC had more than two seasons?

Why the Fatal Fury movie but not either of the OVAs (the movie is technically the third story)?

I actually think they're all good, my biggest criticism being that the Fatal Fury 2 OVA makes Wolfgang Krauser into this young hot bishounen type and more of a basic villain. His game version is more unique and interesting.

(I also tend to not like it when fighting game based anime feel the need to give characters a super move or powerup mode that isn't in the games, but that's something I can live with).

The Rosario + Vampire anime is really different, and definitely inferior, to the manga. The protagonist Tsukune is a great character who evolves into a genuine badass. The art also consistently improves until it looks downright gorgeous in the second half. I highly recommend giving it a read.

Another recommendation for Kill La Kill. It's over the top dramatic and has nice looking women and men.
And it's a statement about how what you wear has an impact on your mental state and wellbeing as well as how society exerts control through fashion and pop culture.

The Ah! My Goddess TV series is pretty cute, wholesome, and normie-friendly. I remember the English dub being pretty good as well.

I think Violet Evergarden is a beautiful show, although I'm sure the cynics here would disagree. I don't know if I'd call it "fun," though.

Girls und Panzer is a meme at this point, but it's also an unironically good show with some excellent action set pieces. It's the kind of weird concept that can only work because it's anime.

Noragami is a solid urban fantasy show.

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo have already been mentioned, but it's worth repeating them.

SAC is a superb show and all, but I have a couple of caveats with it:

1) This show demands full attention. It is not a show you can just have on in the background because of how dense all the dialog is. This problem only gets worse by season 2 where continuity matters a lot more to the plot.
2) The reason why the dialog is dense is because it's an hour show shoved in a 22 minute runtime. Everyone has to say their lines really fast.

I do think the English dub is excellent, largely because lip syncing is significantly less than in typical shows. Everyone's on comms all the time.

Thread tax
Robot Carnival although it is uneven with the shorts as some of them it is apparent the directors are far up their own pretentious arses when making them.

Dai Mahou Touge, a largely forgotten magical girl parody best known for the potato peeling itself and vegetable suicide scenes.

Moldiver

pokemon doesn’t try to hide how it’s only meant to burn your time, and the undubbed characters are likeable (team rocket is better than the protagonists)
however, you won’t find fansubs beyond season two
Not much point in watching past that point anyway.

Its a boring and overrated anime. With how often the Major solves everything out of nowhere while her co-workers are on smoke breaks, it should have been called Deus ex Machina. Most of those little details they sperg on about in episode long flashbacks don't matter when the Major just pulls out a solution that has nothing to do with any of that bullshit.
