It's got to the point that even when I go back and try to play toned-down stuff like Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, etc; Those games' emphasis on trying to get you to date and fuck a party member creeps me out as an adult. I can't play MOST fighting games anymore because characters are disturbingly over-sexualized most of the time now. Hell, I just finished the Hearts of Stone expansion for Witcher 3 last night, and I swear the game gave me like 8 dialogue choices in a row where it was asking me if I was really suuuuuuuuuure I don't wanna fuck Shani?

I wish devs would go off about this crap. I'm here to violently murder things for catharsis and enjoy a good story, I really don't want sexuality tied in with that.

I haven't played the EA yet, but nobody seems to have any examples of this sort of thing yet so I don't know if there are going to necessarily be super overt references to modern political talking points. It's very much in line with Varian's other shit where it is mostly just quirky fanfic quality humor and crass shit like that. The thing was that the ESG money kept these companies afloat for so long that these people were free to make whatever they wanted because they believed that ESG money would be around forever. The bright side in all this is that due to the looming recession these companies are realizing that they can't rely on that ESG money anymore. Doesn't help that many states are now banning ESG and the Republican lead congress are opening investigation into BlackRock leading Larry (((Rat))) Fink to make plans to step back from the company. Companies now realize that they have to make products that the masses want and their diversity hires are kicking and screaming over it. Which is why we are seeing companies gut their DEI and HR departments. In the end, greed wins.

My cynicism and the half-dozen stories like the bearsex or how they got spergy about the results of their own collected data are what're making me assume it'll get garbagier as it goes along. I did play a few hours of some earlier version, the fanfic quality humor and just other bad writing details were definitely there and for me that kills an RPG because of how it breaks my immersion. Maybe it'll end up being good after everything's done but I remember how KoA shook out, and that was like a 6 and a 7 on my Story and Gameplay scales, for whatever that's worth.

That was what did Divinity in for me so it's what I find most off-putting about this. Them quadrupling down on this sort of humor has been kind of off-putting, especially since some of the earlier trailers had a darker tone.

I will admit, the teaser did a good job at hooking in the audience. Seeing this teaser, with the Mind Flayers and seeing the unsettling process of ceremorphosis, lead me to believe that this game was going to have a dark and serious tone to it. From what I've seen however is that the game feels like its going for the tone of the D&D movie which I don't think is going to work for the type of setting and background you have going on in the game.
Also, can we call it truce man. I just want to talk about the game and I do believe that you do have very good insights about Larian and what not.

Once I've finished the last DLC for Witcher 3 I've got a character set up for going through Baldur's Gate 1+2. I remember almost nothing about it from playing it as a kid and I'm curious to see what the writing is like coming from a bunch of dorks born in the 60s and 70s, written in the 90s. I'm expecting ham though. Large ham.

I played through them fairly recently. They're classics but on the writing front they aren't as good as you might be expecting. They were the first games of their kind and have some good moments but also some pretty bad ones.

It doesn't help that this type of humor that was popularized by Marvel is in its death throes. I don't think any Marvel or DC movie made a billion dollars or even went past the 500k mark. That speaks volumes. To be fair to Larian they had this game in development for, what, 5 years now. Around the early days of writing and developing that type of humor was still popular. It is not like they can go back and rewrite the game given that it is more or less finished now. All I can say is that I have a feeling that the humor is going to age like milk.

If the absence of face sliders isn't due to laziness I think it's a sign of the directions all big RPGs will follow.
These freakshows don't think of RPGs the way you or I might. Whereas we might make characters to roleplay like a whoremongering degenerate wizard or a racist drunk ranger, these guys play as Literally Me characters.

A while back when the Zelda TOTK came out an interesting thing happened. There's a village in the game ran by women. Men aren't allowed in and when Link shows up they disparage him for being a male. Transwomen were posting about how dysphoric and anxious this made them feel, while transmen were posting stuff like pic related.

They play these games as if the main character is really them isekai'd to a fantasy world. There's no need for a face slider because everyone will choose Attractive Masculine Face or Attractive Feminine Face. They still need a dick slider though because of course they do. No one will want to make a unique fictional character with a personality and play out their story; someone else's story. They're too busy playing an idealized version of themselves, so every story goes "and then I defeat the dark lord and say a clever quip and then I meet the princess and we FUCK".
And I think these type of games will increasingly become glorified adult daycare sims while the writing devolves into pothead daydreams because none of these people will buy a game marketed on build complexity or tactical variety, but you better believe they'll pre-order if they hear you get a handjob from a dragon or whatever.
