Starfield - Bethesda's new space IP: will probably be full of fun and easily trackable bugs

He also says the community is already complaining about there being "only 4 cities". Something I expect will become this games "no medium armour skill" if there's nothing else major to complain about at release.
Medium armor be damned, what's getting me is that for a game that claims to have 1000 planets, they've done a fantastic job at underselling the scale of the galactic sector or whatever, mostly because it looks like there isn't anything of note out there. 1000 planets and they can't show anything interesting on any of them, including the handcrafted ones (or ones that feature hand crafted sections). Not a single one of the revealed cities have displayed a single memorable structure; not a single planet has showcased interesting geography or biomes. They haven't even showcased dungeon content besides raider bases. They can't give a single reason to go planet hopping to the farthest corners of the map, which you'd think would be a huge part of the appeal because you know, space game.

I dunno if they're doing a solid for Larian and not stepping on their dick before BG3's release, but I need more of Todd's lies. Haven't been this hyped for a Bethesda game since Morrowind, and even what's been shown of vanilla Starfield has me excited. Lots of lame issues, sure, but I prescribe heavily to the "mods will fix it" ethos, and looks to be something that many will sink several hundred hours in, easy.

The lack of farms was typically just an example of the absolute shit writing and world building of FO3, not the singular reason for why it's dog shit.
I used to care about the farms, and I still do in realistic games, but I've come to view Fallout 3 much more positively. People who were into the original isometric ones can't be expected to approve of the change, but Bethesda Fallout is basically a dumb 50s comic book fever dream and it shouldn't have to make sense. People complain about the exaggerated retrofuturism too, since it wasn't so cartoonish in the originals, and it's like, so? OG Fallout looks like piss.

There's an irony that because we had one really good Bethesda interpretation of the setting and one really good Obsidian one, there's really two different series that just share a name.

Fallout 4 was still piss, I remember the whole dormitory being in a buzz the day it came out and I don't think I was playing it even a week later.

I remember a decade or so ago, various devs had the idea of an open world game set on a single street or a single building. It would be small, but super gameplay and detail dense. The problem you run into is what do you actually do in a single street to make such an open world worth your time?

These space games have the other extreme. 1000 planets that people expect to be as dense as Skyrim or GTA, but it's just not feasible. It's why I always shit on Daggerfall. Sure, the map is "the size of the UK" but there's nothing in it. Outside the dozen or so unique NPCs, everyone is the same generic villager or guard sending you on generic procedural fetch quests.
 
@Judge Dredd When Bethesda offered Daggerfall for free on their site with instruction for getting it to run on DOSBox back in 2009, I went in expecting something like Wizardry VI. Instead it was just the most monotonous dogshit that doesn't even have the quirky product of its era defense. I want to be hyped for Starfield but Daggerfall keeps ending up on my mind.

Pretty sure that is actually a single Dev talking about a hypothetical idea of his. None other than Warren Spector, who make System Shock and Deus Ex, and his "One City Block" game where the entire thing would be just one single city block but detailed to the ends of the earth to the point of shit like simulated power outlets and wires you could use to cause short circuits or pull out to make ropes and weapons and stuff like that.

And it is also why I am not really hyped for Starfield. I simply cannot see it being detailed to any sort of polish, the entire thing looks like the moment you try and step out of the designed path it will just start breaking down. Like how Fallout 4 only had 4 dialogue options to chose from for most interactions to the point it got memed into the whole "Yes" "No" "Sarcasm" "Bye" dialogue wheel.

Or worse: how the entire end game was just a retarded choice between 4 factions where choosing one meant you had to destroy the other 3 when by all rights and common sense there is no reason you couldn't make them work together, or have a truce with one or two of them and just destroy 2 or 1 other. Compare the way FO4 handled the different factions to how FO:NV did it with you having to make allies or neutralize other smaller factions before the end game, and you can see the problem. I forsee Starfield having the exact same issue where you might have some basic bitch conflict between say a colonist settlement and local already established outpost and your only choices are a binary of siding with one or the other with no attempt to work it out.

They did a similar thing with Fallout 4 with regards to both gameplay and RPG elements. The RPG elements in particular caught my attention because at the time thee were rumors that Beth had dumbed down the game even more when compared to Fallout 3, and instead of coming out and saying "ya we removed skill points" they tried to hide it. If they're still cagey with gameplay it can only mean bad things for this turd, it'll either be smooth brain accessible with little player imput that almost plays itself, or its going to be a boring, empty slog of a game.
 
I haven't really followed the development because there was such a long stretch of nothing, but I expect the game to be mechanically okay, perhaps a step above Skyrim since Fallout 4 was criticized for the lack of RPG elements. Also, it'll probably look bad for a current year game and run like ass. I might play it eventually though, because I don't have much else to play right now, and I'm hoping it'll fill that Mass Effect-shaped hole in my heart.

Something else I can't get over is how boring the factions seem to be and that's compared to FO4. You've got heckin scientists, the government, mormons, and libertarians. I think there were even a series of teasers for each faction and that right there is about the extent of the information we were given. If there's a Total Faction Death option, the game might be somewhat redeemed.

Always bet on Bethesda to come up with an appealing sales pitch but drop the ball hard when it comes to actually delivering on that idea. In fact, they'll often use their new idea and selling point as a way to avoid doing actual hard work and fleshing out the map.

Settlement building in Fallout 4 is a fun feature, but they used it as an excuse to make the player flesh out the map with cities. Every location you run into that could be interesting or have a quest just winds up getting a work bench plopped in it. Do the work for us, faggot.

The 1000 planets will be the same thing on a galactic scale. There will be maybe 100 quests, a thousand raider bases, and everything else will be empty so modders can fix it.

I think Mike Bithell (maker of Thomas Was Alone and Volume) mentioned that he wanted to make an open world game set in a tower block. I think he described it as a "Die Hard simulator".

The idea you mentioned about simulated electrical systems reminds me of Gunpoint, so it might be doable.

Same for me. They put out a 45 minute deep dive trailer not to long ago. There are hour long videos of people picking out every little detail. A lot of it, like weapon customization, outpost building, combat, and the perk system look like a cleaned up and refined version of Fallout 4. That's why I think it'll be Fallout 4 in space. It also means there's something to speculate on and talk about.

Todd says it is supposed to come out after Starfield and development is already happening at a low level, but I wouldn't hold my breath. From the tiny as fuck teaser we got that is literally just a CGI landscape most people seem to think it will take place on either High Rock or Hammerfell but no real intel exists on the thing.

I just want a proper Morrowind follow up with modern graphics Todd. Just get the old team from it together and tell them to work on it while you push your Skyrim in Space. It really shouldn't be that hard. Come on.
