I know a psychotherapist who says that, without exception, every trust fund recipient he’s treated has been extremely damaged by having access to unearned funds. He doesn’t think there’s any scenario where it doesn’t do harm. Nick Rekieta is a cautionary tale in several respects, but being enabled to fuck up his life and kids by free money might be the only aspect that’s relatively unique in the realm of online personalities.

The only internet famous person I know who hasn’t gotten egotistical or otherwise fucked up by it is someone who had a primary occupation for years before attracting a large following. He still produces work in that field and identifies primarily with that career, not his online profile. Maybe Nick has gotten extra fucked up because he never really practiced law and has no other way to earn money than by making his trainwreck existence a spectacle for the internet.
