The bar itself is apparently pretty open minded and they've let women perform in previous years, including famous female female impersonator Georgie Bee who was in a Selfridges advert:
The bar is also known for hosting Europe's largest drag king competition, "Man Up", and is generally recognised for bringing drag kings (women who perform as men, traditionally) to more prominence within the UK:
They even recommended drag king/trans man "Chiyo" to enter into Mr Gay England (Chiyo did not make it past the final)
Furthermore, they did a sign painting workshop for the recent trans pride parade, with freebies:
Anyway tying in with their "anything goes" ethos, they've let drag kings enter into this drag queen lipsync 1000 competition on top of the drag king competition. However, halfway through this year's competition, they apparently realised that they'd been increasingly inundated with pooners dressing as men in their drag queen competition (on top of the drag king competition that's designed for women and pooners dressing as men), and got in touch with the drag kings to say "anyone's allowed to compete! but this is basically a drag queen competition so please don't perform as drag kings". This resulted in some call out tiktoks:
Anyway they put out a statement basically saying "ok if you want to dress up as men in our dressing up as women competition instead of entering the dressing up as men competition then go ahead"
This is only a fraction of it. Also for some reason a bunch of commentators were too angry to read and collectively misread "two genres" as "two genders" which then caused them to seethe more.
Some people (including former drag race contestants) pointed out the irony of criticising The Glory for this when many of the criticisers go do little dances in clubs that have no interest in drag kings
although most of the criticism seems to be coming from pooners, so that fell on death ears.
