At the end of 2022, an exploit dubbed ENLBufferPwn was discovered in several of Nintendo's online multiplayer games; hackers could send a custom firmware payload to any players in the same lobby / game session, and use it to retrieve sensitive data stored on the system (passwords, payment info, etc). Most of the affected games (such as Nintendo Switch Sports, Splatoon 3, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons) underwent emergency server maintenance and were fixed relatively quickly... but the exploit existed in some Wii U games too, and those games' servers (the non-deluxe Mario Kart 8 and the original Splatoon) have been offline ever since. Well, much to everyone's surprise, those Wii U games will have their servers restored tomorrow (August 3rd). If you still have the hardware and the means to play these games online, then maybe jump on while there's a buzz surrounding this news and while you actually still can; the next time these particular servers get taken down, it'll probably be the last.
