I expect it's more than that, and is a part of a broader drive to be "inclusive". Even back in the days of Ward Cunningham's wiki, real names was a controversial policy (see discussion). Many people have reasons for not feeling safe sharing their name online. It is often argued that women in particular are less likely to contribute if they have to expose their identities to the whole world, and female underrepresentation has always been one of the largest political issues in tech.

The Linux culture shift, as witnessed by the Code of Conduct, would have moved it inevitably in this direction.

That said, I have no doubt that the troon phenomenon helped expedite the change.

Depends upon different distros surprisingly. As an example, Arch and Gentoo Linux communities are filled with faggots and trannies while distros such as Artix and Void Linux are filled with based shitposters.
