This war is entirely theater. We are on day 528. Russia could realistically eliminate all command and control targets within Ukraine with it's current capabilities and put an end to this charade. But they chose not to because it is in their best interests to prolong this war as much as possible. That said, to be fair, Mariupol was surrounded on all sides by Russians, unlike Bakhmut whom the Ukrainians continue to maintain a narrow corridor through the western side of the city right up till it fell (which later they had to mount a rescue operation to rescue stragglers who got trapped.)

That is a failing of the VVS doctrine and equipment issues I think. The Soviet VVS had these priorities:

• Airborne leg of the nuclear triad
• Air superiority and defense of the far east of the horde of US bombers with minimal runways and a vast expanse of land (Think Mig-25 and Mig-31) that was the URSS,
• Preventing ground troops from getting fucked by CAS.

So SEAD and ground-pounding wasn't that much of a priority. Same for the AVS (Naval aviation), which top priorities were:

• ASW warfare
• Protection of the SSBNs until launch of missiles
• Air superiority
• Blowing the fuck out of any CTF with nuclear tipped Kh-22s.

Attrition war in a dynamic that greatly benefits russia.

Ukrainian air force is by now a token force. They migh have up to five jets left, maybe ten helis. Most if not all major airstrips are unusable, and they were proven to take off from highways. Every now and then they attempt a flight but are quickly forced to withdraw. A few months back a story surfaced how russians were able to ambush ukrainians with a tactic that Red Baron would use, meaning they either have non-existant air control or all ground radar stations were destroyed (likely). Air defence is also pretty dire, with russian drones and missiles flying pretty much unimpeded.

Russians are either running CAS through Su-25 and Su-34, AWACS above Belarus and Belgorod region, or have a group of Mig-31 and Su-35 flying high altitude air superiority above their own lines, waiting for targers of opportunity (which are rare nowadays). On a few occasions the very basic baits worked, shooting down few further ukrainian jets. A few days back an ukrainian Mi-24 was shot down.

Both sides use a fuckton of drones - small ones. Bayraktars were big for a week, and after that they lost all of them. I remember an article complaining that turkey cannot replace the 100 bayraktars shot down over ukraine, and another one claiming that up to ten thousand drones of all kinds were lost by ukrainians each month.

Air force is working, its just that its operations are limited to frontlines and securing the air space. Missiles and Shaheds do heavy lifting in attacking targets within ukraine - tonight there was a big wave of attacks. Expect a few more NATO officers "lost in tragic incidents" in coming days.

Oh, and Tu-22 and Tu-95 are used to lob Kalibrs, while Mig-31s launch Kinzhals.
