It's possible. But I think it's just as likely that Nick is more motivated by the lack of status than he is the lack of money. If the money was important to him, I think he'd have modified his actions in public really early on. Shit, if money was important to him, he'd have made the Montagraph law suit go away rather than shipping wheelbarrows of coin to Randazza.

When the farms loved Nick, he'd bask in the reflected glory and he loved the farms back. When he became a certified lolcow, that reputation rapidly escaped Kiwifarms and you'd see it reflected in the YouTube comment section and on Twitter. Had he kept that 5k subs number up, he would be raking in 25k USD/month of gross for doing random 1hr streams (before he signed the contract). I'd wager that now the locals chat is only about 100 members active on their best day, the current active subs on locals is probably at 1000 tops and nets him 5k at best. That's still better than his streaming self could muster up in super chats per month (300ish x 12 bare minimum streams, if potatoherder's numbers are accurate).

But expecting 5k locals subs to grow once it reaches that number to begin with is unrealistic since he promoted the gift. There would be people who would sub one time to be included in the gift pool and then leave. Still, his popularity was peak at the time that even if the subs dropped to 3k after that promo, and Nick didn't tard out, it might have still been growing again and he would still be generating a middle 5 digit passive income instead of the probably low 4 digits he is pulling now. Of course, since Nick is retarded and delusional, he definitely thinks he never does anything wrong so he should be growing towards 10k locals sub milestone, anything else would be outside forces fucking with him. Like himedall's panopticon for example. It's ruining his business! Not his own behavior!

Personally I've always thought locals was always headed for disaster the moment he went in hard with it.
