Unpopular views about music

While I will agree to an extent, I cringe a little at anyone who says they can't listen to modern rap because of the "subject matter", as if Tupac and Biggie were saints.
Bigge and Tupac were playing the role of gangsters. Tupac was a highly intelligent theater kid who went to a gifted school and was in shakespeare plays. Biggie's mom worked two jobs to send him to private school so he would have a good education. Ice cube went to a school in the suburbs and had a degree in architectural drafting in case his music career failed. It was all fake. None of them were actual killers or gangbangers. Modern drill rappers are not faking. Guys like Bobby Shmurda, King Von and Tay Kay are actual killers. Even rainbow haired Tekashi69 was in a real gang which committed murders.

I'm not saying you shouldn't listen to them but there is a difference. NWA, Snoop and all the rest were pretty much all an act. Modern gangster rappers are actually doing the shit they rap about.

"Dr." Dre doesn't even have a bachelor's degree

How does Ornette Coleman's "Skies of America" rank in terms of contributions to uniquely American modern classical music?
You need to be affiliated to an academy (in particular UC Berkeley or Princeton) to be called a composer of American modern classical music. Sorry I don't make the rules.

Might've said this before:
U2 actually was a great band at one point and deserve all the praise they got when they were. War, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby are all phenomenal albums. Joshua Tree has been overplayed to the point I don't need to ever hear some of the songs off of it again, but it still deserves love. Anyone who shits on U2 probably just heard Bono was a cunt and decided it was cool to do without listening to anything they've made off a couple radio hits.
And yes, they were a punk band for a long while. Punk doesn't have to sound like shit.

Probably a bunch of cold takes, but Nirvana didn't kill "metal". The hideous shit that they claim Nirvana killed wasn't even metal in the first place. It was LA buttrock with lyrics as vapid as modern rap, and it was oversaturated shit that was collapsing anyway. Nirvana was far more metal than that shit.

The hatred towards nu-metal manages to be far more cringe than nu-metal itself.

ICP are pretty enjoyable, and their lyrics run from being retarded to actually clever.

Making lists while pointedly excluding a bands most popular song often stinks of being a tryhard. Free Bird and Smell Like Teen Spirit are popular songs for a reason.
Artpop is one of Lady Gaga’s best albums despite the fact that a lot of people consider it her flop era (including Gaga herself, who basically disowned the album like a bastard child).
I agree. The only stinker is the R Kelly verse on Do What U Want, an otherwise great song. I have no love for Christina Aguilera, but the version with her shits on the R Kelly version from a great height.

"But didn't people say this about metal in the 80s and gangsta rap in the 90s?" Yes but the main people consuming gangsta rap and metal were suburban white kids who never were going to gangbang and murder in the first place. If you're a 18 year old highschool dropout from Detroit with no dad living in poverty the appeal is very obvious.
I agree with you on the whole but if you're an 18 year old highschool dropout from Detroit with no Dad living in poverty, your chances of becoming a gangbanger are pretty fucking high to begin with, whether you listen to rap or not.

Thread tax: Rod Stewart is a secret genius who consciously chose to stop making great albums around 1973 because he was more interested in pussy and brandy than wokring hard on music. Still put some bangers out in the 80s though.

I can't help but jam to even the most commercial, saccharine Rod Stewart music from the 80s.
I don't care what anyone says, this shit is fun.

This album should be considered one of the greatest in rap.

ICP are fucking hilarious. They're the most epic musical trolls in existence
Water, fire, air, and dirt. Fucking magnets, how do they work?

Unpopular music opinion? Hmmm... well, is it unpopular to say that I don't even pay attention to modern pop music? Of course I hear an earworm here and there, but I never listen to modern pop music by choice. It all sounds so fake and gay, and I can't take any of it seriously.

However, I do listen to the hits (and the more obscure) from before I was born.

ATLiens and Aquemini by Outkast curbstomp most "critically acclaimed" non-Southern rappers entire careers.

Any discussion about Evanescence is guaranteed cringe, especially in metal circles. It's the same incorrect shit they've been parroting since 2003: they ripped off Nighwish and Lacuna Coil, Tarja and Floor are better singers than Amy, and so on.

The whole vinyl/cd/streaming debate is a bit weird. Just buy what you like, fuck, buy all of the above, or don't buy at all and just pirate. What matters is you actually listen to the music and don't just let it collect dust for Internet clout. Everyone knows that live shows are where bands make money anyway, so stop being a hikkiNEET and catch a live show and buy some merch.

No. This is very likely to be one of the most popularly held opinions among everybody over 25.
I'm not over 25, so maybe I'm an old soul lol. But I guess I also have to consider that I'm not a normie either...

ICP is definitely better than its fans, or at least the ones who earned them their bad reputation.

They definitely have a couple tracks I like a lot. Like Riddle Box.

I was also somewhat surprised when I heard an interview they did with Howard Stern where they actually came across as pretty smart and not like the retards they usually portray.

You're not an old soul. Pop music just sucks now. Name ONE new pop artist from this past decade that has actually lasted more than 2 years.
Does The Weeknd count? That's the extent of my knowledge.

I get what you're saying though. Modern pop music really is whatever is trending on TikTok to use as background music for <insert current stupid social trend here>.

They're definitely smarter than they seem. They played up the asshole personas in the video I linked with Sharon Osbourne, but she deserves it for being one of the worst people in the industry. But when she accused them of lying on merchandise sales and ticket sales, they dropped it and you could tell everything Violent J was saying was authentic.

They got lots of props from other artists for that clip. Sharon is a notorious rip off artist and just foul person in general.

Actually yeah. I suppose the Weeknd counts, but he's more of the R&B crowd which does stray into pop music sometimes. Any genre of music can become pop(ular) music if it is played enough, but there's been a serious crash in the quality of music that is actually designed to be pop music. :(
