I myself was an early(ish) proponent of him being less than genuine in how he presented himself to people. That there was a disconnect between what he said, and what he did. Hardly the earliest though. I know people on the Farms who tagged him as a grifter, or otherwise less than honest, since practically day one. Because I believe as I do, I think it's a wild goose chase to try and find out exactly when he turned rotten. It could have very well been sometime much earlier in his life. See above: he is feeling pressures he has never counted upon or prepared for. The 'victim role' is a cathartic one that allows you to blame others and find comfortable reasons for your problems. While helpful for avoiding self-deletion levels of emotional shock, it barely allows you to progress through your issues and trauma.

I think that the reason I have been sceptical of a Nick redemption arc is that I do not see any of the signs that Nick is in a very healthy place to process his life issues. Transformation of a toxic person will never be very apparent to people who knew them before their 'change', given the emotional baggage associated with it. Nick is never going to get back to what he was, but he could make his future better. He has to do that for himself and his family; not the fans he has lost.
