There are shitholes, and then there are imperfect cities that are intentionally aggravating these problems for votes. The US is not a shithole, nor is it anywhere near it. Philadelphia, Los Angeles and New York city are not representative of the entire country, nor are it's problems. This more than anything is what kiwis fail to understand. Your shithole city is not the entire country. Most of it by land mass is beautiful, prosperous and safe. Remote work has basically destroyed the need to live in a major city.

If you drive 40 miles out of Houston, for basically the same price you can live in an area 4x safer. If you drive 80 miles, for less than half the price of Houston, you can live in an area that is 2x safer. It's not the US that's the problem, it's individual cities that skew crime statistics for the rest of the country.

The twist is I have never lived in the US, just consumed a ton of it's media, yet these were my default stances and school wasn't doing anything that would make me change them.

It's not till a good chunk of years later when things challenged my view and I had dissonance, but thankfully instead of rationalizing, y reevaluated my beliefs. Many people don't even reach that step. And that's how you end up with school rebels that still love globohomo and all is right in the world.
