Bad webcomics

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
because I honestly think Ky-nim made one of the only genuinely good Nuzlocke comics out there in the form of Myths of Unova. So why her? Am I missing some context? I know she's gone a little SJWish since she finished that one, but am I missing something else?
That's just it. She made a really good Nuzlocke comic. It stood out from the rest and attracted a lot of people on DA right around the time SJW shit was taking root. There was a decent following for her Diamond Nuzlocke (and I was one of them) but it wasn't until MoU that interest in Nuzlocke comics exploded.

Second, she's being dishonest about every negative criticism coming from trolls. I'm sure there are some people who simply hate her for no reason, but I've also read a ton of polite and well thought out comments about why they didn't like the "jokes", or how she used too many panels, or ways she can improve her art, etc. People have politely pointed out that some of her comics are either unoriginal jokes that have been repeated a million times by others, or that her comics are antagonistic and will alienate readers. Of course she doesn't have to listen to these people, she can do what she wants, but rather than listen to criticism or ignore it, she instead accuses everyone of being bullies and sexists
She's still at it.

In the words of the journoscum she fellates:
Learn to code.

Also, how the fuck is AI going to replace bitter losers living their mom's basement? If I'm replaced by an AI, its not going to make me any less bitter or allow me to move out of my mom's basement.

Does it count as cowdom if they're clearly doing it on purpose?
She has potential to be a lolcow. While I can tell she goes after trolls because it's easier than coming up with her own original content, you can also tell it really bothers her that so many people shit on her comic. That's why she makes comics complaining about complainers, because she needs validation from others to assure her that she's not the problem, and that her artwork is good and her jokes are TOTALLY FUNNY. Deep down she has to know her art is meh and her jokes are lame or don't make any sense. This comic right here is a prime example, I get what she was going for but the "joke" doesn't make any sense, so it's just another unfunny comic.

If anything, maybe a lolcow thread isn't needed but maybe her own comic watch thread, like Blobby The Blob Fish? That way this thread doesn't get shitted up with all of her comics. Plus it would be funny to see edits of her comics in a thread like Blobby The Blob Fish.

I posted this in the reddit general thread, too, but for anyone with the same morbid curiosity as me, Ellen/PizzaCake's 18+, adults only, Patreon content can easily be found over on kemono.party. It certainly does exist. If you seek it out, consider this a warning that you probably won't like what you find
I can confirm that this is true. And I wish that I could unsee it.

I have decided that, to counter the constant complaining I do about the absolute state of nuzlocke comics, I shall share some good Pokémon comics (I say Pokémon and not Nuzlocke because that gives more variety) to balance out the bitching
I know this thread is mainly for the bitching, but I also want to emphasize that there's a reason I keep reading this shit and it's usually to find stuff like this

for example, today I found out about PMD-Saviors
It's a very cozy comic presumably based around a DA ARPG (seeing as the author's other comics are almost entirely based off those), but it's nowhere near as ridiculously high-stakes as those are and instead is just a very very nice ride. Every page rhymes, the art is done with really pleasant markers and pencil, the protagonists are two kids trying their best. I think the most generic + frightening thing that's happened so far has been a brief fight with some mon on their level. It's a bit short at the moment (only 74 one-panel pages), but even at this length it's worth a read. Feels like hot chocolate on a frosty day.

Another comic in a similar vein is PMD: Team Rowanberry, though seeing as that's based off the events of PMD-E (yes, that PMD-E) it's got more fighting in it and is generally a bit more action-oriented.
It starts out with a beautifully soft traditional style before transitioning into digital, but throughout the whole thing the team sticks together and is generally the best part about the series. It's a pretty comfy "friendship saves the day" kind of thing- not as corny as that implies, either- with much more content than Saviors and holding the rare honor of being a fanfic comic that's actually been completed. The pacing is a bit rough at first since the author is ESL, but it gets much smoother by the end and I found it very enjoyable. No rhyming though.

PMD: Victory Fire is an obligatory mention. Incomplete, but has like 500 pages and has been going since 2012. Unfortunately, the author's been missing and supposedly had a terrible life while writing the story, so it's unlikely to be finished... but it's probably the only fanfic comic I've ever seen that manages to pull off "property but more mature and edgy" well. The characters are likeable, the worldbuilding is a treat, all of the art is very pretty (and impressive considering it was made solely in MSPaint), and I'm still mad that it'll probably never end (even if the fans are attempting a continuation without sulfurbunny).

PMD: Another Perspective is a more reluctant recommendation since it's quite short right now and updates at a glacial pace, but the concept is fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. A Rocket Grunt gets isekai'd, shenanigans ensue. The art is traditional- very pleasing to the eye- and the comic has also been translated into Brazilian Portugese if that interests you for whatever reason. Worth giving it a shot at the very least.

And the last PMD comic, I swear, is Milos from Home- a comic that actually bothers with worldbuilding and backgrounds and comes out much better for it. The protagonist is energetic and very well-written, the world surrounding him is beautifully illustrated and very interesting even despite the semi-standard premise, and the whole thing has some genuine peril to it that I haven't seen much in other comics, let alone fanfics. Definitely worth reading- even if unfinished- due to its presentation and size (currently at half a thousand pages and ongoing) alone.

As for actual Nuzlocke comics...

Blooming Glory is worth it. Trust me, I'm not pulling your leg. The art is dog shit and doesn't get much better, but the writing is actually a cut above the genre. It's still not shakespeare, mind you, but it's good enough to get you invested and goes on for quite a while.
It's mostly free of woke shit- I think the worst it gets is like one side character having a girlfriend near the end- and knows how to communicate genuine peril which- again- is a strength. Also it is fucking massive and would technically be complete if the author wasn't also cataloguing the entire postgame.
The bar for these things is really low, i'm sorry. If nothing else, BG isn't a terrible guilty pleasure.

Pouch Creatures Dark Difficult Version is exactly what it sounds like and is probably the only purely-comedic Nuzlocke to come out in the last 5+ years. It doesn't take itself seriously at all and has the kind of insane deadpan humor that I can't help but exhale strongly at. The main character is a psychopath with only one straight-man in the entire universe (who's also her closest friend; it's a nice dynamic) to keep her contained so shit gets stupid real fast. Completely free of signaling or politics and nearly at the endgame with 600+ pages to its name. It gets funnier as it goes on, but you might lose a few brain cells in the process.

Pi and Pea's Adventures and Myths of Unova are total shoe-ins that are completely intertwined in my head because they crossed over once in an extra bonus thing and I've been unable to separate them since. They're also both pretty similar- both started around the time of Black/Whites' releases, both begin comedic but eventually turn into relatively decent dramas (very good by Nuzlocke standards, good by fanfic standards, pretty okay by novel standards), both were drawn by Asian girls (one Indonesian and one Korean) with similarly colorful, chibi-ish art styles that eventually became more realistic, both are completely free of political bullshit, and both were some of the most popular Nuzlocke comics around in their respective heydays.
The main differences come in the little things: Pi and Pea's is a Black Nuzlocke while MoU is White, the two characters' teams are pretty different outside of maybe 2 members from different points in time sharing similar characteristics and one pair (of the 2) being brought onto the team + dying at nearly the same points in their playthroughs, MoU is Ky-Nim's second webcomic as opposed to her first, MoU is in full color throughout the whole thing as opposed to in purely monochrome like Pi and Pea's, the worldbuilding is totally different...
Both comics are enormous, but Myths is actually finished (with an ongoing epilogue) while Pi and Pea's has been stuck at the endgame for nearly 3 years now. I don't expect it to be finishing any time soon, but it may as well be done with the amount of story already out there.
I don't recommend reading them back-to-back due to them both being somewhat faithful to Black and White's ingame stories, but they're decent reads on their own. MoU requires some patience because it can be a bit obnoxious up until the Desert, but it gets there fairly quickly so that shouldn't be an issue.

Jet's Black Nuzlocke is in a similar boat, only not really at all aside from its obvious chosen version. Ignore the dabbing in the banner, it's not representative of the comic's humor.
This comic began around the time of Black's release and you can kind of feel that at the beginning of the story, but as it goes on the comic gets much better. It's almost completely lighthearted, with most of the deaths and drama being momentary blips instead of drawn-out melodramatic "I'll never train again" moments like in most Nuzlockes, and the only grave danger in it comes near the finale (which the comic is currently approaching at a consistent pace). It'll probably be done within the next year or so, and it's a pretty fun read throughout.
This is also the only Unovan Nuzlocke comic I've seen that not only chose Tepig, but got past the first gym while doing so. Almost every single other comic protag chooses Oshawott or especially Snivy, so if you want the tiniest bit of variation in that regard then give this a shot lol.

Finally, Folded is a very comfy Nuzlocke I used to love reading when I first began wasting my life on this stuff. It's not really got a proper hosting site- the only place you can read it without broken images is fucking DeviantArt at the moment, and the author seems to have gone MiA- but it's worth the read if only for its atmosphere. It's very quiet and cute. Kind of like sitting in a park on a cold Autumn day, bundled up in a scarf and jacket while waiting for someone you love to come chat with you. It completed its run back in 2017/2018ish. Very much worth reading.

Some general tips for reading this shit...

Stay away from Sinnoh Nuzlockes on principle. The only good ones are ass-old (like, pre-2010 old- ancient in Nuzlocke terms). Every other one is extremely melodramatic and never EVER gets finished. They will go on for 300 pages without any progress, take over a decade to finish up to the second gym, diverge from the canon storyline to such an extent that there's no point in being a Nuzlocke anymore (not a bad thing, but these comics often have bad replacements for the already-poor in-game story), or just barely even get off the ground in the first place. The only exception to the "abandoned or ass-old" rule I've found has been a Shining Pearl Nuzlocke by a 30 year-old transgender furry transformation fetishist with bad art and even worse humor. Also worth noting is that Sinnoh itself makes for terrible Nuzlockes without very specific rules due to its difficulty spikes and extremely limited encounter pools (especially in Diamond/Pearl), leading to almost every single team looking the same and most comics here being even more interchangeable than the others.
By far the most likely region to have its playthrough abandoned and/or reworked within less than a chapter and is just cancerous in general.

Kanto-based Nuzlockes are the most likely to be sane. Granted, this doesn't mean much, but the chances of you finding some random adult who just wants to replay a game from his childhood and write a story based off that (instead of gay sex and melodramatic racism plotlines) are much higher here than anywhere else. Those specific Nuzlockes are what I like to call "Dad Nuzlockes"- they kind of exist separate from the rest of the bullshit and are just really really edgy "tough guy" takes on the challenge that are very earnest about how tough they are but kind of disconnected from both the rest of the series and Nuzlockes in general. In fact, I'd argue the entire subgenre was pioneered by a non-Nuzlocke comic; Mokepon, which is somehow still updating and pretty much follows every hallmark of the subgenre to a tee. Edgy, "realistic" take on the franchise solely based off RBY/the original anime/only or mostly Kanto? Check. Male author with a very specific apathetic cadence to his writing (who often self-inserts as the protagonist)? Check. BLOOD and GORE and DEATH? Yeah, that's there too.
They used to be a lot more common on Smackjeeves, but since their authors are disconnected from the ""community"" and Smackjeeves is now dead, most of those comics are lost to time and those that survive are often updated sporadically.
Outside of Dad Nuzlockes, Kanto's probably the region with the most finished comics to its name. A lot of much older Nuzlocke comics are FRLG-based, giving them more time to finish their work, and for whatever reason these comics just seem to get done a lot more often. Probably because people who like Kanto tend to be more normal than the rest.

Unova's a coinflip. You're either gonna get the worst, most tumblr-esque art EVER with 20 pages maximum and no good story, or you'll get an actually finished comic with a good plot and great characters (see the aforementioned recommendations). There is never any in-between.
Black 2/White 2 lockes are worth avoiding though. Those games have Sinnoh syndrome for whatever reason and never get off the ground. Farthest i've seen one make it without cancellation is the second gym.

Alola is bad. All comics relating to Alola are made by literal children (or the aforementioned 30yo fetishist) who watched preschool shows into their double-digits and thought that was how storytelling worked. These comics usually make it sort of far due to the fact that the authors are so young, but they're never good and not worth reading.

Johto has it rough. For whatever fucking reason, it's hit the hardest by Social Justice bullshit and almost every modern comic based in Johto will decimate your brain cells with the sheer amount of MOGAI race-swapping gay shit in it. Not a single one sticks to the setting of "traditional Japan", instead deciding to adapt the setting to "New York but with less skyscrapers and more pagodas", and most don't make it past the second gym. Those that do don't make it that far because they're good- they make it that far because the author is determined to shove their ideologies down your throat whether you like it or not by making everyone but the villains super special oppressed snowflakes. Avoid all of them save for the two I recommended. Unless you're looking for so-bad-it's-good shit, that is.

Hoenn is probably the most diverse region out there. It's got Social Justice Specials, Preschool-tier Writing, relatively standard dramas, pure comedies(?) in the older style of Nuzlocke comics, an entry from Der Fetishist and even a fucking Dad Nuzlocke (this is the only other region I could find one for)! If you had to pick one region to read through that encapsulates all of this stupid shit, it'd probably be this one.
Granted, not many of these comics are actually quality (there's a reason I didn't link any Hoenn comics in my recommendations), but this region is home to the first Nuzlocke ever (which is honestly funnier than a lot of what came after) so it deserves some respect. Not much, though.

The other regions are either too new to comment on or have too few Nuzlockes in them to say. Galar seems to be going the way of Sinnoh, as does Kalos, but I can't say aaanything on Paldea because it's hardly been out for a year. All of its comics have seemed Alola-like, though. Stay away.

All that aside, I'm gonna share this one piece of art from an otherwise-dead comic to close things out just because I like it. (I tried thumbnailing it, but the site would barely let me post- let alone thumbnail- it, so I couldn't. Sorry.)
Enjoy, I think, and thanks for reading if you bothered to sift through all my intense autism.

The constellations not even remotely matching their subjects is a nice touch.

This thread makes me wish I'd kept all those CD-Rs of pictures I saved off the internet twenty years ago. The internet-that-was was full of garbage webcomics that I can't even remember the names of.

One that always stuck in my memory for some reason was about some entirely black, humanoid alien living amongst humans but it was obviously written by some kissless virgin that never got past the sniffing-butt-stage of a relationship. In one comic this alien was working at a convenience store and there's a group of girls drinking milkshakes, when one comments "Oh my god, it's like an orgasm in my mouth!" - To which the alien replies something to the extent of "AS TEENAGE GIRLS I GUESS YOU'RE USED TO ORGASMS IN YOUR MOUTH LOL." Comedy gold, but totally not in the way the author intended.

This is how it feels to get negrated

I don’t remember what the name of it was, but there’s a wholesome comic about the MC from RS dating a Team Magma grunt.

Probably because there's no real set of games in the series that has Johto's aesthetic. The SJW shit is particularly strong in the G/S/C nuzlockes because for some reason troons and genderspecials are drawn to the retro pixel art and general "comfy" feeling the games have, which is particularly grating because I'm a Johto kid and I love sperging out about how cool Gen 2 is.

troons and genderspecials are drawn to the retro pixel art and general "comfy" feeling the games have
I'm not sure about that- 9/10 Johto Nuzlockes are HGSS, not Crystal, which is the retard's pick for "comfy Johto" (it's still plenty comfy, but Crystal has better music + graphics and it's smaller in scale so it does it better). Crystal pulls off the troon-favored aesthetic infinitely better (and also just looks better fuck you) and the protag has dyed hair so if you were right I'd think most Nuzlockes would be of Crystal instead of HGSS.

THEN AGAIN, HGSS had the reputation of being the best games in the series for a whole decade after their release (and are still serious contenders) and its gameplay is a lot less frustrating than Crystal's (box is usable, bag isn't irritating, much more variety in encounters primarily due to the Safari Zone and Headbutt being changed from a TM to a tutor), so maybe they're just Crystal fans that played HGSS and are trying to ape Crystal's appeal or something.

IT JUST GETS WORSE

FOR REFERENCE:
1695869838598.png
this is Eusine.
He looks a little flamboyant, but he's a traveling magician(?) chasing down a legendary beast that he's been hunting for at least a decade. You can't really do that shit without being a bit eccentric.

The comic author decided that this somehow equated to feminine new-age spirituality and that Eusine should be a girl as consequence, for some reason. Why is he lesbian with the main character's mom? Because every damn character needs to connect back to the main one for some reason since he's so cool and awesome and edgy I guess.

I'm only thankful that he's not explicitly stated to be trans- though, considering the comic we're talking about here, I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed that he is later on.

Anyways, back to stupid shit:
1695870137237.png
I'm starting to think the author doesn't even play the games lmao

either that or this is another victim of "turn every location into New York" syndrome that these damned comics have

Personally I think Pizzacake is absolutely deserving of a thread. This BPD wreck has all the trappings of a burgeoning lolcow.

She requires validation from people on the Internet to the point where she has started posting nudes and lewd art to attract Reddit coomers. Despite all of this, she also cannot stand any kind of criticism. It's like someone that works at a foundry that can't stand heat. She will reply to a lot of comments on all of her content, negative or positive, and has the issue of painting any and all critics as being impotent retards that she can constantly dunk on.

She has "taken a break" following a mental breakdown from all the hate she was getting. This lasted maybe a couple weeks because she immediately came back to reddit like nothing happened. Despite not being able to take the hate I guess she decided a good idea would be to post pictures of her naked body online. I was searching around trying to find examples of her NSFW content and there were tons of DMCA takedowns so I can only imagine that she is chronically online probably Googling herself. (Hi Ellen!). I gave up, because seeing some 5/10 middle aged woman's nudes isn't worth sifting through shady porn sites.

You would think that this is probably some young woman that hasn't learned about the world yet, but nope, she's almost 40 years old and has two kids. I had seen her comics over the past couple months on Reddit and she really seems to be getting more and more unstable. I would write an OP but I'm afraid I would fuck it up and also I'm lazy.
