pretty shocking that he managed to write a book that's worth some praise.Go with “In the Black”. It’s his stab at military sci-fi and while it’s dumb it benefits from being unintentionally fun in parts. There’s an alien race, a Cold War in SPACE, a bad guy capitalist and his sexy robot (the bad guy is so poorly written he comes across as an okay guy). You’ll cringe every time the superior woman Captain Kamala shows how cool she is, but there’s ship battles and adventures so it’s worth a listen.
Gate Crashers is a muddled mess and Patrick tries to introduce a Zapp Brannigan character that we’re supposed to hate but he’s a fun character so big fail there.
If you want to wallow in misery you need Starship Repo. The premise is great - an officially licensed starship repossession company (in space). If you like that idea for a story go and read “Just Desserts” by Will Tate. If you want a teenage Mary Sue hacker ninja who solves everything because she’s just so awesome and an animatronic Fonald Plumpf statue (that ends up being a great guy) you should hold your nose and burn your credit on this one. It’s the worst of the three and gives maximum Patrick pain points.
and i'll agree on Starship Repo being the most miserable still. granted, i still haven't read past The Ark, so i can't imagine anything being worse than that obvious ideological bullshit dressed up in a mary sue minor getting shat on by aliens.
