Goodbye Volcano High - "The Future of Gaming", The Parody Game of the Beloved Snoot Game Franchise

I've barely paid attention to this pile of shit since Sony shoved it into their PS5 reveal and a bunch of coomers on /v/ cucked them out of the spotlight by releasing a superior game 2+ years before the actual thing released.

Looking at some footage, I'm disgusted at how all the characters move like a shitty 2000's PBSkids cartoon and wobble like cardboard cut-outs whenever the game tries to animate any motion aside from head tilts or shot/reverse-shot mugging at the camera. The voice performances are even fucking worse, I hate how bitchy Fang's voice sounds. The rest of the characters sound like they're straight out of a 2011 anime fandub or abridged series. When they yell during (melo)dramatic scenes, I can't help but cringe.

One of the slightly funny things to come out of the supposed rewrite that occurred when KO_OP fired their lead writer for writing about Harry Potter SFM porn was at some point they made /v/ coomers' fan-favorite dinosaur character "Rosa" into a tranny just to spite all of the snootgame fans. That is some top tier spite.

Edit btw here's the ending for anyone who cares:
Spoilers in case you want to experience the disappointment yourself: They don't even show the fucking meteor crashing into the planet. It's ultimately ambiguous, some people say they hear a rumbling sound during the ending credits but there's no explosion or collision sound to add any bit of finality to the story.

Side-rant about the ending:
It really sucks because the concept of a local indie band of teenagers having one final concert to let their feelings out to their hometown before everyone has to face an inevitable, unstoppable collective death together and the world ends sounds like such a powerful narrative note to end a tragedy story on. It's got me thinking about the feelings of fear, togetherness, bizarre comfort, etc that a community would feel in that kind of dire situation. It would be PERFECT for a coming of age movie or YA novel or something like that if it were done well.

KO_OP fucked it up because I guess they couldn't bare to see their OC's getting hurt or triggering anyone. If they actually built up characters worth giving a fuck about and had given the characters realistic motivations in the face of imminent extinction, instead of checking off diversity boxes, cramming in dumb le funni DnD scenes to pad the game and shoving in as much Millennial Whedon snark into the game as possible, then this ending would hit extremely hard.

That's a GB/hr for storage, and a quadruple-fold increase of the minimum memory from the specs in 2020. Compression? Optimization? Pfffffft.

Christ I’ll never understand the love for NITW. That game is faggot garbage.
As a person that (kinda) liked NITW, I can tell you it's mostly because it wasn't a fucking visual novel, some jokes and scenes do actually land, characters never makes you feel as their sexuality is the only personality trait, the music does most of the work and, most importabtly, it follows Guybrush Treepwood's notion of "Never spend more than 20 bucks on a computer game".
The game ends at the concert with a fade to black, but it's only implied that the meteor hits. There's a rumbling sound in the background between the last two songs, and the aurora borealis effect starts to intensify, but you don't actually see the meteor.
Imagine finding out that the world is about to end and instead of joining the orgy, you go to a indie band concert.

I already said this before, but the meteor is one of the biggest bullshit in this game. It is not supposed to be a metaphor, yet no one gives a shit about it, afaik there isn't even a Don't Look Up style satire and now it turns out there isn't even a pay off. It has no business being in the game, as it serves no purpose.
Imagine going to school, playing DnD and worrying about gender bullshit, when the world is ending.
Realistically, there would be mass riots, looting, rape and rampant murder in a situation like this.

For all the press this game received over the years, it's bizarre that there's still no reviews of it whatsoever.
It seems no one really cares about this game. I guess the usual suspects choose to ignore it, because they know it is too weird for normies, so it's not worth the hype, as it would never gain traction. Plus, everyone is still high on BG3, Armored Core came out and BOUNDAIRES REACHED is dropping on Friday.

They cared over the past several years! I was expecting at least a review from one of the left-wing rags, like RPS or Kotaku. Something along the lines of:

10/10 - masterpiece
Cons: music, art, story, programming, price
Pros: it has trannies

Realistically, there would be mass riots peaceful yet fiery protesting, looting wealth redistribution, rape consent accidents and rampant murder social justice in a situation like this.
Fixed that for you sweetie!

Nobody gives a shit since it can be seen from a mile away that it sucks. You won't get a video from Dunkey raving about it like with Celeste or Pizza Tower or Undertale. If there is no movement to latch on to, they don't give a shit, since it's only as useful as it is to push the narrative. It's the reason why pandering to genderspecials is always a waste, since they will be your harshest critics if you step out of line and even if you suck the tranny dick, they won't give a fuck about you if you don't get eyes on them.

Also, any discord spies around? Really want to see the fallout in the hugbox.

I think you're overstating the amount of press Goodbye Volcano High got over all this time. From what I'm aware, it only really got articles around the time of its announcement at a PlayStation show, which then very quickly led into the funny controversy over the game's original writer. After that, I get the impression that the game effectively dropped off the radar of everyone except 4chan, the one place that continued to care for years with an odd fascination for high school anime dinosaurs.

Mentioned in 8 articles on RPS:

I would have expected they'd be reviewing every one of the "101 most anticipated games of 2023"...

Nobody gives a shit about this game except deranged coomers and shitposters. It couldn't even hit 300 players on Steam.

Memes aside, they were completely retarded to release it right after Armored Core came out, right before Starfield comes out, and when everyone and their mother is still circlejerking over Baldur's Gate 3. It got completely overshadowed even for the usual journoscum who this is practically tailor-made for.

And a couple of weeks after Steam's visual novel fest, kek. They really fucked that one up.

Shame Cavemanon didn't release Wani on the same day, just to spite them even further

I fell asleep watching a video of it. It's just so fucking boring. The characters are stiff; the voice acting is stiff; the animation is stiff; the whole story is stiff. I can't even enjoy it in a "so bad, it's good" kind of way. Nobody cares what's going on so why should I care? Maybe since it got pirated I'll try it out for myself and give it a more proper review here, but it just doesn't seem worth it.

So apparently not even the plot/story is original?

It really isn't worth the effort, that's my take from just having finished the stream from earlier in the thread.
There's no background music at all in the last half of it, the whole Battle of the Bands/CalderaFest thing is forced and awkward, the voice acting quality is all over the place, the models glitch out. FFS the concert itself was closer to a powerpoint presentation with screenshots of shit you're supposed to care about but haven't been introduced to that connects the characters' lives, the outfit you pick for Fang fucks up and doesn't show up on said slideshow.

I guess Fang slept with Naomi? Like, slept-slept. The pacing is so awkward that I can't tell when there's a new day because all of the transitions are literally just a fade-to-black loading screen with a little tarot card icon to let you know the game is loading.

None of the characters are interesting, Fang throws a hissy fit over Trish wanting to work with bugs when Fang herself never communicated her own hopes and dreams - just like any other real, self-centered troon that utterly fails at communicating their thoughts, expecting everyone around them to be mindreaders.

I guess Naser is a cool dude and Reed is a huge nerd despite looking like a jock?

Everything about the "game" feels like dropping into a young adult show like Buffy but the point of entry is in season 6, midway through the season. "Show, don't tell" is a rule many filmmakers ignore, but Ko_op took that to heart and NEVER tells ANYTHING about ANYONE. Cut to the concert powerpoint - you're shown a ton of memories from Fang and friends' shared childhood, but you're being told *nothing at all* as the indie pop music plays over it, evoking exactly zero emotions because it hasn't earned it.

Goodbye Volcano High feels like a poor imitation of previous attempts at a Western VN, like Katawa Shoujo, that hits on all of the usual shonen anime romance plot points. Literally you would have a better anime experience watching/playing School Days, at least it has drama even though the main character is nearly on par with Fang in terms of being a self-obsessed asshole.

The only time the game got a reaction out of me that was genuine was because of my own personal issues, it wasn't something the game planned or intended to do, I only reacted because I'm a soft cunt. The other reaction the game got out of me was me laughing out loud at all of the ridiculous glitches and quality issues that should have been polished off in the last three years of development.

Five hours. In five years. For thirty dollars.
EL. EM. AY. OH.

Don't even pirate it. Don't even watch a stream of it. Play Snoot Game instead. Goodbye Volcano High just isn't worth your braincells.

Edit btw here's the ending for anyone who cares:
Someone mentioned in the SnootGame /trash/ thread that it would've been a better ending for them to do the concert only for nobody to be in attendance, because it's the end of the world, people have their own shit to deal with, and virtually everyone would rather be with their families.
