Nick framing this in the political context of "left and right" is not productive to the discussion. It only serves to imply that Nick is somehow impartial due to his political affiliation (which is unrelated to comedy itself as no political party has a monopoly on it).

Funny or not, comedic techniques have been used in propaganda and/or to conceal a more serious intent. Nick's mind either isn't sophisticated enough to comprehend this, or (much more likely) this is a self-serving disingenuous bid for attention (even as Nick claims to hate drama and wants to stay out of it).

Nick also references what is/isn't written in "the joke handbook". Since it doesn't exist, much like "human rights", what is/isn't permissible is largely governed by permissions that we give ourselves which are routinely violated and abused in countless ways regardless. There is no "authority" on comedy for Nick to appeal to so he's in the same boat. The closest thing would be whatever someone's idea of free speech is, and even then you would have to convince the concerned party or they won't respect it.
