From what I remember, he made this woman plead guilty from the get go too. What he was trying to do was to try and get her a lightened sentence but the judge didn't buy since the crime was fraud and she hired a non public defender (Nick). Nick then passive-aggressively retorted back at the judge at the lift that he was pro bono. The judge now presides over his lawsuit with Monty.

I'm sure Nick thought he was being very professional at the elevator but he also seemed surprised that Schneider had a negative opinion of him and also thought that he was being very polite in his conversations with Null. There's also the issue that he likely had no intent to practice law in the county again and may have been less guarded in what he said in the elevator versus what he would in another circumstance.
