Hard agree on this in general, but I do think that the situation Ralph has found himself in is rare even amongst junkies.I said it’s possible for him to get sober, not probable.
If it’s literally impossible then that would absolve him from responsibility for his own life. That’s why sad sacks wallow in the “I’m doomed! There’s nothing I can do!” narrative — it’s way easier than owning your shit and making amends.
To believe Ralph is truly beyond help is to believe he’s not at fault for continuing to degenerate. I’m not giving him that pass.
As an aside, I remember first find out about WingsOfRedemeption, and thinking it must me miserable that the one thing you do to pay the bills just results in your being harassed and trolled mercilessly. Not to handwave some of the behaviour Wings did to bring this onto himself - the point is that he appeared stuck without any good decisions. Mind you, he's since gone on anti-depressents, got a wife, beat up Boogie and seems to be a bit happier and less of a lolcow.
Ralph is in a similar situation - lots of the things that would rein in Ralph's behaviour are not present in his life. No boss, a low effort job he can do inside, no responsibility. This enables his behaviour. I think if Ralph is ever to change all of this needs to go - but will Ralph intentionally impoverish himself and take on a job of his own accord? Literally never happen, he will never make that choice. It would be difficult for most people to make, then again Ralph's a fat weirdo. If he was forced to because the money dried up? Maybe, but he may also just commit seppuku.
