Empathy is like any other emotion. It's a feeling; objectivity never factors into it. It doesn't make you soft or stupid to have empathy, even for those who largely deserve none.
My condolences. I don't personally know how this feels, but I saw friends who suffered similar circumstances. These friends had parents who were denied appointments to screen for cancer or check out odd lumps. You'll never guess what hospitalized them not much later.
Then, like your father, these people had to endure dying alone in a little hospital room, only being allowed visitors when they were so close to gone they essentially were already. Given how these men are, I fully expect that as things decay more in the US they'll track down some of these doctors and administrators that made their situations possible and have a hard conversation with them.
So I can understand your perspective, and I also think it's valid. Some things are simply over the line, and "forgive and forget" is fucking stupid anyway.
