What does banning a breed of dog exactly mean?

If you have a banned dog, the police or local council dog warden can take it away and keep it, even if:

• it is not acting dangerously
• there has not been a complaint

The police may need permission from a court to do this.

If your dog is in:

• a public place, the police do not need a warrant
• a private place, the police must get a warrant

You can get an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to 6 months (or both) for having a banned dog against the law. Your dog will also be destroyed. <------------
If your dog is banned but the court thinks it’s not a danger to the public, it may put it on the Index of Exempt dogs and let you keep it.

I'm on the fence about this. The more powerful breeds should absolutely require a license. I think the smaller, confirmed passive breeds should require potential owners to go on a course to learn everything they can about taking care of dogs (and maybe specific courses depending on the breed). There are way too many owners in the UK who have out of control dogs because they can't be bothered to learn the skills needed to take care of them. If you're not going to learn everything you can and prepare for a pupper, then you shouldn't have one. Simple as.

I'm suspicious that the reason they lump all these different breeds under the name pitbull is to create a massively disproportionate bite statistic. I can't help but wonder what the chart would look like if they were properly separated like every other breed on it is. I'd be willing to bet money that the individual breeds would account for less than or equal to the amount of attacks as rottweilers.

I always assumed that the pitbull breeds are a lot muddier than other established breeds. As in people will use staffy and pitbull interchangeably. Also curious to know if the genetic differences between the dogs under this unbrella are enough to be worth noting. With all the backyard and shady breeding I think it complicates things. You see a huge difference between a kennel that churns out some kind of putbull vs a kennel that churns out golden retreivers or airedales.

They call them "mixed breeds" in shelters. Look at your local big city shelter and its all "mixed breeds"



This shelter likes to get around the fact that the dogs are aggressive by saying they "have trouble meeting other doggy friends and would prefer to be housed alone" or "isnt comfortable around children" This shit breed is flooding US shelters and this is my number one reason for disliking them. Shelters refuse to put them down so they overcrowd available space.

What individual breeds? How is the American XL Bully Shitbully Bull Pit different from the American Staffordshire Pit Bull Bully? And what happens when there's a crossbreed of the two?
