To my knowledge, a lot of them recently have lore to differentiate themselves from the saturated market. By that same virtue, most of them abandon that after a few streams for their actual personalities, with the lore doing not much more than influence the character design/chat in-jokes.

Seems to me like it's a doomed prospect from the start. I was actually a bit shocked when I first saw these promos on MATI, I figured for sure it would be some sort of RWBY-style collaborative project. How the fuck are you supposed to keep to your "uwu softboi library" persona while you're reading off superberries from QueefMaster69 and falling down a pit in whatever flavor of the month game you're playing?

My theory: Fredrik Knudsen got troll's remorse and this Vtuber persona is his way of making amends.

The storyline of his Astraline character is about how Fredrik Knudsen set out to learn more about humans, with no ill intentions, but didn't understand the concept of biased accounts, which lead to a corruption of the library and introduced a rift into it, which will eventually destroy it and Knudsen himself, unless he stops it, which I interpret as meaning "made video about lolcows by using kiwifarms as a source and uploading them to youtube which further encouraged harassment of those individuals unless he sets the record straight". Caligula might be a stand in of every cow he made fun of. If you watch that lore video again with this in mind, it all makes sense.

Consider the self-absorbed way he thinks, writes and talks, and tell me that he wouldn't write such a self-absorbed story. Of course the analogy is retarded and cringe, but that only makes me more convinced that this is what Knudsen is legitimately going for here, since, to him, everything he does is high art and has a deep meaning.

It kinda is, at it's best its normally a background excuse for why the woman in the lefthand corner is covered in rocks or whatever the suits decided would sell, and at its worst it's something the talent drops after it becomes to gay to be worth the paycheck. For the most part, it's corperate window dressing, which makes fred's eight hour extended cut intro kinda baffling. Admittedly I don't know anything about the "indie" vtuber scene, but I can't imagine it's any more lore intensive

Could somebody who's into Vtubers tell me if having lore beyond "I'm a big tiddy anime babe uwu" is becoming the hot new trend for these people? Kinda makes me think of when the Channel Awesome people got a little too high off their own farts and started relying on elaborate skits and lore that spans across their reviews of forgotten Hulk comics.

The vtubers I watch either have some fantastical background lore a la "an exorcist from a [vaguely Japanese country] absorbed too much corrupting energy and has permanent scarring in the shape of a mangled arm" or "literal reaper of souls who likes to rap and sought out an idol company to become a star" and on the other hand you have "perfectly normal animu girl" that eventually evolves into "is actually twin girls and one of them died, the surviving twin having trauma and sometimes switching personality with the dead twin".

The lore is usually just there as inspiration for the avatar and it's usually forgotten or not played into after a couple of months.
Some vtubers are better at keeping up the kayfabe and keeping up appearances during streams but they're the exception rather than the rule. It's mostly just insecure people or people who are recognisable talents from another niche branch of the internet who wants to assume a new online identity without any baggage.
I think there's a 100% guarantee that the vtubers I watch have had their facedox and previous online lives revealed, though they tend to want to distance themselves from said previous lives, unlike how Fred is entirely open about who he is.

Also, indie western vtubers tend to be extremely cringe or they fail completely at the whole "streaming but not with my real face" aspect. There's very little roleplaying or kayfabe, so you're essentially just watching a tiddy streamer without being exposed to a face that ages, or a butterfaced woman who would never have the reach she does if she was showing her own face on stream.
