You don't get to full professor without going through that first. Now, associate professor might be worth making fun of if someone is being pompous about it. That is not a tenure track position and is generally pure employment at-will or yearly contract. They often get treated like shit. Not always. Especially in professional schools, they're often someone who actually works in the profession and teaches because they like it or because it makes a nice resume builder.
