From what I understand she comes from a somewhat large Christian family, I'm not sure the money situation, but I believe she lived in a smaller town since they moved out of the cities because it's what she wanted. When she and Nick got together in college they were supposedly broke, and also they got together after she broke up with an abusive ex while nick pretended to be gay to get close to her. Not sure if any of this has helped but it's all I can think of off the top of my head

My cold read is that Nick was the lanky nerd who was perpetually horny, but never got the chance to be with an actual woman because of his asshole-ish personality and lack of endearing traits. He develops narcissistic outlook on the world.

Kayla comes from a large religious family that by all that I can find is very strict and traditional. It would not surprise me if they were the 'no drinking, no dancing, and no dating' type of strict. This leads to repressed emotions and no guidelines on how to approach the opposite sex and lack of self-esteem.

What this leads to is unhinged university craze that is really a second manifestation of teenage rebellion. Nick dives deeper into degenracy and Kayla keeps flitting between short, dysfunctional relationships until narcissist meets low-confidence and they become horrendously co-dependent.

I don't think she ever lived in the cities. I think she originally comes from the area where they live now. She went to college in Marshall MN which is actually a smaller town than where she comes from. I think they went to Spicer after marriage. I'm not sure they ever lived in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro area.

She seems like she comes from some sort of strong christian background given that she wanted so many kids and wanted to homeschool all of them. The hard thing to figure out is why she abandoned any sort of church and church life a few years ago. The kids are still involved with what seems like a rather fanatically evangelical homeschool experience through the homeschool collective and they do things like that bible camp on labor day. But no church.

Nick seems a very different person. He was raised a suburban nerd who seems to have gotten heavy into porn and believed that porn reflects a real world that can be aspired to. He isn't religious and seems probably at best an agnostic. By the way he has talked and the references he has made, he seems to have been deep into porn even after getting married. As well, his ideal life would be to be Dick Masterson.

I suspect her dive into degeneracy started out as an attempt to please him. But how these things start doesn't really control how they develop or how they end. She is now this heavily tattooed half creature who spends her days educating her kids in a homeschool collective of people too fanatical to recognize christmas as a holiday, but also goes with Nick to gay bars with at least Nick on Molly, wonders in DMs about becoming a swinger and goes to these meet-up events with Nick's sleazy friends like Dick, Drexel and Camelot.
