Lies of P - First proper bloodborne like - Which is about *checks notes* steampunk Pinochio kicking ass made by Koreans

That's the thing though, I am blocking - but even with 60 reduction I'm taking way too much chip damage, and can't recover what I lose. I play defensively and I can't tank enough to make up for the lackluster damage, and if I play offensively the enemy remains tanks and now I get gibbed when I'm locked into an attack animation.

I think a lot of this is pissing me off because there's no real feedback with staggering. In Sekiro I had a clear visual cue of the damage I was doing to an enemy's poise, so could see what effect my various tactics were having. Here it feels completely random if the enemy will stagger, and I have no clue what's effective. Is parrying doing anything? My charged attacks? Fuck you, apparently, because that's asking too much.

I dunno. I'm gonna take a breather and maybe start again tomorrow with a different weapon (the lack of upgrade materials has really punished experimentation...) and stats. I'm at 15 Vit/End/Weight, with 15 in Dex and Str.
I was getting similarly frustrated until I started holding down the block button just a little bit longer than tapping it when the enemy swings. This increases the chance of pulling off a perfect parry and provides a decent block if you still miss the window. Hard to explain but experiment on some grunts until that clicks and then the rest of the mechanics kind of follow suit.

Does it play less like Sekiro outside the demo? I keep seeing the Bloodborne comparison but other than the Victorian aesthetic it played much more like Sekiro than a Souls game or Bloodborne. The dodge was shit and it seemed pretty obvious it wanted me to play the block/parry game.
The Sekiro comparison is appropriate. I'm not even sure if the dodge has i-frames as there's a p-organ upgrade that decreases the damage taken during dodging.
I'm aware they're remaking it but I'd be really surprised if they change much.
It looks pretty different. It's being made by a different studio and from what I've seen, they're actually trying. They've not been cagey about showing the game.
I think I linked this earlier in the thread but it might have been eaten during the outage. It's all footage from the same area but one shows the character creator and another shows the hub.

I'd assumed they'd just upscale it but yeah that does look pretty different, none of the chunky tank movement I've come to expect. Wasn't aware they'd switched dev studios.

I liked the Belle Epoque meets Uncanny Valley look of that thing and thought it might finally be the title to ease me into the Soulslike genre, but now that I am reading the thread, I am starting to have doubts.

So would Lies of Pee be a good title for a beginner?

Personally I’ve found it a lot easier than bloodborne or Sekiro because the enemies are slow enough and don’t have ridiculously long combos that once you learn the patterns you can effectively parry pretty much all the attacks. So definitely great for beginners, Sekiro relied too much on you having advanced knowledge of parry mechanics from previous titles and the whole gun being a parryable weapon instead of melee never made sense to me for bloodborne.

It hasn’t got nearly the same polish as either of the two though and looks like a previous gen downgrade in terms of graphics, but it’s a fun romp through a nicely made world and scratches the soulsborne itch in terms of taking a few tries to beat a boss and the dopamine hit when you finally learn their patterns and smash through a fight. It’s a solid 8.1/10 for me so far, although I’ve only just beat the factory and have no idea if it gets more unfair later or how far I am into it.

No idea on Lies of P, but I'd honestly say the easiest one right now is the original Dark Souls.

You just need 3 pieces of wisdom:

1. Be a wizard Harry. Magic really makes a lot of encounters go from hard to pretty easy, you will still have to stab shit till you have enough spell uses, but it's the easiest way to play without prior knowledge
2. At the start, when something nasty comes towards you and you don't have a real weapon (a broken sword does not count as a real weapon), you want to fucking run, you may think you can't, but you can.
3. Once you pass the initial area and get transported somewhere else, if while exploring you see skeletons, you go the other fucking way, you are not ready for the fucking skeletons and won't be for a long time, there is another path, you just didn't notice it.

As long as you follow those 3 suggestions, you should have a more or less solid start of the game. Also, a shield is your friend and you don't need anything fancier than a sword as long as you upgrade it and like how it works.

Clearly they spent way more on graphics than tightening up gameplay
The whole industry is like that now, even AAA games like Tlou had/have shitty AI but great graphics because its far easier to just do an asset dump with modern hardware than having to code for good gameplay. Back when graphics hardware was much weaker and you had to optimize everything so having good graphics was quite a challenge, but these days a game being near photorealistic its easy, even some random guy messing with UE can make a demo that looks amazing, but of course it plays like absolute ass and its riddled with bugs because fixing that its what actually takes talent now.

Lies of P has a Victorian England setting with a Lovecraftian horror aesthetic and there's no plague doctor outfit/old timey gas mask as costume options?

There's even an undead plague in the game as a plot point, you niggers had one fucking job.

I am starting to get a sinking feeling that the game has, in fact, lied to me. Ba-dum-tiss.

They promised me jerkily moving creepy puppets in amazingly beautiful Vesailles-like enviroments, but once you get out of the admittedly gorgeous Hotel Krat for the first time and find Geppetto (at which point the demo ends, how very convenient), it's all brown ramshackle hovels, brown dungeons and brown corridors inhabited by discount clicker zombies.

Please tell me it gets better after the Fallen Archbishop.

There are a couple areas ahead like what you'd imagined.

This is why I don't trust demos

I've played around 10 hours and I really like the game so far. Just beat the fire boss at the factory. The world is interesting, the combat is fun, and I like the lore too. Grimdark Pinocchio somehow works.

I get why people are complaining about the difficulty. It is insanely hard, and the parry window especially is very unforgiving. But I don't find it janky at all. I think a lot of people are trying to play it like dark souls where they try to roll through every attack and they're getting asses kicked. Once you realize that rolls are for getting out of the way, and not for phasing through attacks, the game becomes more manageable.

I've also noticed that items are a lot more useful in this game. In the Souls games I would always end them with a gigantic hoard of useless stuff that I never ever used, because rolling through attacks was always the best option and it didn't cost limited resources. In this game I find myself experimenting with limited use items a lot more, and they can really help.

I find the weapon system really cool, and the amount of customization you have is fun. I like the Legion Arm a lot too. It feels like a better version of the Shinobi Prosthetic from Sekiro, which was only ever useful in extremely niche circumstances.

Install the latest patch.
Launch the game and activate any Stargazer ability.
Visit the Hotel and interact with Geppetto to trigger a P-Organ cutscene.
Acquire the Krat City Hall Key.

[DUALSHOCK®4 & DualSense™ Controller Display Error on Windows]

If you trigger keyboard input while using the DUALSHOCK®4 & DualSense™ controller on a Windows operating system, the game's input UI may switch to that of a keyboard. In this case, the key binding for 'Menu' will be displayed as 'C', instead of 'ESC'.

Didn't think people were getting filtered by the Archbishop but I can see them getting bent out of shape on the King of Puppets.

"Decreased the HP of some field minibosses"

This is a really really good change. Some of those things had thousand and thousands of hp, more than some actual bosses.
